Yuusha Ni Zenbu Ubawareta Ore Wa Yuusha No Hahaoya To Party Wo Kumimashita! NOVEL V1 Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Kind Revenge and the Slave Market

I, Ceres, was clutching my head.

I don’t hold any grudge against Zect and the others… yet somehow, I’m supposed to take revenge.

It needs to look like revenge to outsiders but not hurt them too much.

I have to figure out how to pull that off.

Talking with Shizuko-san and the others tends to veer into pretty cruel ideas, so I figured I’d better think this through alone.

Hoping for inspiration and a change of pace, I came to the neighboring town.

This place is a bit more developed. If the capital’s like Tokyo’s Shinjuku, this is about the size of a regional city. It’s got an Adventurer’s Guild, a Merchant’s Guild, a church, and even two or three brothels.

Is there… some kind of hint here?

I glanced at the Merchant’s Guild bulletin board.

A notice caught my eye:

“Slave Market Now Open… Free Consultations for Orcman Purchases.”

Orcman’s a giant of a man, 220 centimeters tall, famous for adventuring and using his earnings to buy slaves for his harem lifestyle.

Come to think of it, Kazuma-niisan, Kaito-san, and Shuto-san all mentioned wanting to buy slaves too.

Should I check it out?

I decided to visit the slave market.

◆◆◆

Wow. As expected of a market run by the capital’s slave traders—it’s massive.

But the timing’s bad.

The nearby villages are pre-harvest right now, the leanest time of year for cash.

Nobody’s likely to have big money to spend.

“Hey, aren’t you Ceres, the Dragon Killer?”

“Yeah, I’m Ceres, but Dragon Killer? What’s that about? Oh—you’re Orcman?”

“Gahaha! Just like I’m called Orcman, some adventurers are calling you Dragon Killer. Man, I’m glad it’s you. You’ve got cash, right? I’m drowning in window-shoppers here. Buy, like, ten of ‘em!”

“I’ve already got one wife and three fiancées. No way.”

“What’re you talking about? Just four? I’ve got ten wives, you know that, right? You can handle more—you’re a guy who makes bank!”

“Sure, I earn, but my wife’s terrifying. I don’t wanna die.”

Crap. Now that I think about it, I’m guild-married to Shizuko-san, but the other three aren’t official yet. In the village, common-law marriage is enough, so I forgot. I should’ve brought them along.

“But… yeah, okay. I can’t buy, but I might know some buyers. Can you show me around?”

“Hell yeah, I’m free!”

Orcman gave me a tour of the market.

There are a lot of good girls here.

“Quite a few young ones, huh?”

“Yeah. Poor things—probably sold by their parents. Buying a slave is like saving them, you know.”

“That’s one way to look at it.”

“Exactly! Think of it as helping people and buy some!”

“Maybe. Wait—elves and dark elves are supposed to be pricey, right? Why’re they so cheap?”

“Oh, those? They’re old. Elves look the same even past 200 years, so it’s not just their beauty that makes them expensive. They’re like family heirlooms, passed down for generations. At that price, they’ve probably got about 30 years left. See? No vitality guarantee.”

“Vitality guarantee?”

“Yeah, with capital slave traders, if a slave dies within three years from illness or defects, you get a replacement of equal value for free—long as you show a healer’s certificate with a national license. No guarantee means they’re pretty old. Still, even an elf granny lives 30 years or more, so you’d get your money’s worth. Just watch out—their body odor’s strong if you’re sensitive to smells.”

“Thirty years is plenty by human standards.”

“Right? If humans live to 50, it’s like buying a 20-year-old human in terms of years left. Perfect for elf fans!”

“True. And that girl over there—looks like a noble’s daughter. She’s cheaper than I expected too.”

“Noble daughters? Classic dead weight. Can’t do housework, act superior with their education, look down on folks. And nobles sold here? Usually pissed off royalty or high nobles. Trouble magnets.”

“It’s like all my common sense is getting flipped upside down.”

“Yup. You can lose big if you don’t know the game.”

“Got it. Hey, can I put down a deposit to reserve some? Keep it if I don’t buy.”

“Sure thing! Unless it’s a super high-end slave, two silver coins holds ‘em for 14 days.”

“Alright then…”

I went around the market with Orcman, reserving a few slaves.

“Say what you want, you’re pretty eager to buy, huh?”

“Maybe.”

This should… probably work out.

◆◆◆

I returned to the village.

I headed straight for Village Chief Najim-sama’s house.

“What’s up, Ceres? Something you need?”

Perfect timing—Najim-sama’s here with his two advisors, Kajina-san and Kashimu-san.

“Najim-sama, can I talk to you like you’re my grandpa?”

“Sure thing! I really think of you as my grandson. Kajina, Kashimu, that’s fine, right?”

“Don’t mind me.”

“You helped out at my place plenty. I’m good.”

What I’m about to do should involve Najim-sama and the others.

Otherwise, it could cause problems.

“Then I’ll talk like your grandson. Grandpa, you guys still got any sex drive left?”

“What’s that now? Well, fine. Nope, not anymore.”

“Same here. …What a grim question.”

“It’s kinda lonely, yeah.”

Figured—they’re well up in years.

“Got it. Actually, I’ve got presents for you all.”

“Presents? Come on, you’re always giving us stuff. That’s enough.”

“Yup.”

“You give us gold coins every time you’re back. I feel bad.”

“I’m thinking me and my group might leave the village soon. I’m worried about you guys after we’re gone. So I want to give you slaves as gifts. Your kids are grown and gone, and you’ve got no wives. I’m really concerned.”

“You… really? So that’s why you asked. Thanks—we’re always worrying about who’ll look after us in old age. Sorry… this helps a ton.”

“Making us feel cared for—sorry, but thanks.”

“Even real grandsons or sons don’t do this. I’m grateful.”

“Then let’s head to the next town tomorrow. I’ve already reserved some. See you then.”

“““Thanks!”””

I caught Sectol-ojisan’s eye as he polished a vase nearby.

“Sectol-ojisan, you too.”

“Me too… really?”

“Yup, this time it’s for everyone who’s helped me.”

“Man, you’re like real family. Even Zect wouldn’t do this.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

I said my piece and left Najim-sama’s house.

◆◆◆

Next stop was Kazuma’s diner.

“Kazuma-niisan.”

“Oh, Ceres. What’s up? I paid you back, right? Sorry about that.”

“Forget that. There’s a slave market in the next town. Wanna go buy some?”

“I’d love to, but money’s tight.”

“What’re you talking about? I got your repayment, so I’ll buy. I reserved a woman you’d like. Tomorrow work?”

“If that’s the deal, I’ll close the shop tomorrow. Sorry for making you go out of your way.”

“It’s fine. We’re leaving soon, so I just want to do something for you. That’s all.”

“I see. You’re like a brother and a son to me. If my capital shop takes off, come eat there.”

“Definitely.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

I kept it brief to avoid interrupting Kazuma-niisan’s prep and left.

◆◆◆

Next up, Kaito-san. He’s probably tending his fields right now. Yup, there he is.

“Kaito-san.”

Kaito-san stopped working and turned to me.

“What’s up, Ceres? Still around?”

“You said you wanted a young second wife, right?”

“Yup…”

“Let’s go buy one tomorrow.”

“Whoa, whoa, my money’s tied up. Tomorrow’s too soon.”

“What’re you saying? I’ll cover it.”

“Why? I haven’t done that much for you.”

“You let me have Sayo-san. Plus, you’re like a dad to me. I’m probably leaving with my four soon. No telling when I’ll be back. I’m worried about you being alone.”

“You’re one hell of a guy. My daughter Meru doesn’t even send money.”

Hero’s party makes that tough, huh?

“Really?”

“Yup, she’s a lousy daughter. You’re way more filial. I’ll gladly accept your kindness.”

“Then tomorrow morning, meet me at the village chief’s house.”

“Got it—I’ll be there.”

With that, Kaito-san went back to his fieldwork.

◆◆◆

Last stop: Shuto-san’s general store.

“Shuto-san.”

“Hey, Ceres-kun. What’s up today?”

“Shuto-san, there’s a slave market in the next town.”

“Oh? That so? I’ve been meaning to buy one, but…”

“I saw a noble’s daughter there. She looks smart—perfect for you.”

“Really?”

“Yup. Don’t worry about the money. You’ve looked after me since I was a kid, so I’ll pay.”

“You sure?”

“Of course.”

This is it. This way, I can make it look like revenge without hurting anyone.

Shizuko-san and the others should be satisfied.

Well… I hope they will be.

◆◆◆

I told Shizuko-san and the others I’d be going out with everyone tomorrow.

“Ceres-kun, where are you going?”

“Ceres, if you’re heading somewhere, I want to come.”

“Ceres-san, if it’s to town, can I join?”

“Ceres-chan, I want to go too.”

All four looked worried as they spoke.

“Tomorrow, since it’s with everyone else, you’d probably just feel bad. It’s about that revenge I’ve been thinking about, and I came up with my own plan. I’ll report everything when it’s done. Please trust me.”

“If that’s how it is, I guess there’s no helping it.”

“If you settle it in a way you’re satisfied with, fine, but if it’s too soft, I’ll complain.”

“True, Ceres-san, you’re so kind, it’s worrying.”

“Ceres-chan, well, do your best… You don’t need to go easy, you know.”

Will this really be okay?

Will they get mad if it’s too lenient?

Sectol-ojisan’s hair went white in an instant that time.

Something half-hearted won’t cut it.

◆◆◆

The next day, at the promised time, I headed to Village Chief Najim-sama’s house.

They must’ve been eager—everyone was already there.

Impressive. Even Shuto-san, who’s always late, is here.

He’s usually at least 30 minutes behind…

Is it sex drive or longing for love that’s got them this punctual? Whatever.

A fancy carriage was parked at Najim-sama’s house.

“A carriage?”

“Yup. We’ll have wives on the way back, so we need it, right?”

“Exactly.”

“We’ve gotta prepare this much to look good.”

Najim-sama and the others are fired up. Where’d they borrow this fancy carriage?

It’s luxurious.

In this village, the chief’s like a king, and the advisors are like nobles.

With a king, a duke, and a marquis around, even my usually chatty four are quiet.

Even Kazuma-niisan’s barely talking.

I went to sit in the driver’s seat, but—

“What’re you lot doing? Ceres is paying today, and you’re making him drive too?”

“I’ll do it.”

Even Kaito-san tones it down in front of the chief and advisors.

“Speaking of, what kind of wives did you pick for us? At our age, we won’t complain, but someone kind would be nice.”

“As long as she’s good-natured, I’m fine.”

“Yup. At this age, I won’t gripe about looks.”

None of them have any sex drive left.

That’s exactly why those girls are a perfect match.

“Don’t worry, I picked women who suit you perfectly. About the deal, though—I know I said slaves, but I’m thinking we skip the slave tattoo. What do you think?”

“Why? Not that we care much.”

“It’s less about buying slaves and more about finding you wives. Just my preference. Oh, I’ll still get the ownership papers.”

“Fine by me. Right?”

“Yup, wives it is.”

“Works for me.”

Guess the chief and advisors want to save face, calling them “wives” even if they can’t perform.

The other four really aren’t saying a word.

“I’ve got good matches for Kazuma-niisan and the others too. Like I said, think of it like a matchmaking session and look forward to it.”

“Ceres, what kind’s mine?”

“What type’d you pick for me?”

“I heard the gist… looking forward to it.”

“You saved me from the mines, so… young’s good enough.”

“I picked women who suit you all, so relax. It’s like matchmaking—if you don’t like her, we can swap, so take it easy.”

““““Can’t wait!””””

Before I knew it, the carriage reached the town.

◆◆◆

“Glad you made it, Ceres.”

Maybe because I’m a big spender, Orcman greeted me at the slave market entrance.

“Orcman, thanks for today! Looks quiet, though.”

“Gahaha! No kidding. Picked the wrong season. The traders are tearing their hair out. That’s why we’re all in for you buying a ton today! Those two big tents? Use ‘em freely.”

“Thanks.”

“No problem. So, start with those three, right?”

“Yup, please.”

“On it.”

“Alright, Najim-sama, Kajina-sama, Kashimu-sama, this tent. Everyone else, wait in the other one.”

“Hoh? We’re up first, eh?”

“Feels like matchmaking—kinda nervous.”

“First time since my old lady.”

These three were surprisingly devoted husbands.

I don’t know the full story, but they each married one woman and stayed with her till the end.

Guess they were blessed with good wives.

Plus, they’re dried up now. That’s why those girls are perfect.

“Brought ‘em. Go on, introduce yourselves.”

“I’m Naji…”

“I’m Suruto…”

“I’m Terea… Are these the people you mentioned the other day? Is it really true?”

“Back then, it was just a guess, but I confirmed it, so it’s fine.”

Not just three old guys—Najim-sama and the others are staring, enchanted.

“Najim-sama, advisors… come on, greet them. It’s rude otherwise. Even if they’re slaves, I’m buying them as your ‘wives.’”

“Right, I never imagined such beautiful women… Ceres, you trying to kill me? Nice to meet you, young lady. I’m Najim.”

“Same, one of the three elders, Kajina.”

“Same, Kashimu.”

Three elders? Never heard that one before.

Is it my imagination, or is there a sparkly explosion behind them? Najim-sama’s looking 30% more handsome today.

“Young lady? Oh, I’m embarrassed…”

“I’m probably the older sister here.”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

No wonder they’re stunned.

These women are elves.

“Ceres… you’re really giving me an elf? Want me to name you the next chief? Alright, you’re the next chief!”

“That’s right. Ceres is fine by me.”

“Me too—Ceres.”

“Look, I’m not interested in the village chief’s seat or anything like that. You’re like my grandparents. Don’t talk about sad stuff like what happens after you’re gone. If you want to repay me, just live a long life. That’s all I need.”

“““Ceres!!”””

I’m in trouble if Najim-sama and the others start crying on me.

“These three are definitely elves, but they’re not as expensive as you might think. Elves stay youthful-looking even as they age. Plus, they all carry painful pasts. I’m sure you guys can become great tea-drinking buddies and get along well. What do you think?”

“Are you young ladies really okay with an old geezer like me?”

“I’m older than you, you know. And you’re very charming.”

“What about me?”

“To me, you’re practically adorable.”

“Me too?”

“Yes!”

Najim-sama and the others are blushing.

Looks like it went well.

These elf women are beautiful, so they’re often seen as ‘sexual objects.’

But no matter how gorgeous they are, their hearts are those of old women.

If they were in an elf village, they’d be elders sipping tea.

For them to be embraced by men until they die must be agony.

That’s why these three dried-up old men are the perfect match.

Elders together—they’ll get along great.

Jimna Village is rural, full of greenery. It’s a good place for these elves’ twilight years.

I told them they’re not slaves but ‘wives’ on the carriage ride.

It’s like introducing grandmas who suit my grandpa, who was kind to me as a kid. That’s the vibe.

The six of them chatted happily—

Naji paired with Najim-sama, Suruto with Kashimu-sama, and Terea with Kajina-sama.

Lucky their tastes didn’t overlap—made it easy.

“Ceres, you’re the pride of the village.”

“You gave me what I wanted most. As long as my eyes are black, I’ll help with anything.”

“Same here. Wanna be the third advisor?”

“Haha, don’t worry about it.”

They’re saying it casually, but that’s a big deal.

In village society, no one but the chief can oppose an advisor.

To even joke about it shows how thrilled they are.

“Ceres-san, thank you for finding such pure-hearted people.”

“My ideal man.”

“We’re truly grateful.”

“Yeah, I’m glad. Be happy, okay?”

“““Yes!”””

Even if their lifespans are short, the elves will likely outlive Najim-sama and the others.

The chief and advisors will probably ensure their wealth goes to them after they pass.

A happy elderly couple is born. Nice, nice.

For Shizuko-san and the others—

I’ll say, “I gave the village chief and advisors ‘elf slave wives.’ Zect loves elves, but as a Hero, he can’t marry subhumans, so he’ll be insanely jealous and cry when he sees them.”

That should do it.

◆◆◆

I quickly paid the slave trader through Orcman and got the paperwork.

Since Najim-sama and the others were in town, I let them enjoy some shopping.

As for their new clothes—

“Gahaha! You’re buying so much, it’s on the house!”

Orcman threw in the clothes as a bonus.

Can he just offer freebies without permission? As expected of Orcman—his clout with slaves is unreal.

Three old men walking hand-in-hand with elves.

From the outside, it must look insanely enviable.

I poked my head into the big tent, and Shuto-san rushed at me, all excited.

“Did Najim-sama and the advisors settle their matches?”

“Yup, they’re done. I sent them to have fun in town.”

“Great, then it’s my turn next, right? Countin’ on you!”

Apparently, while I was setting up Najim-sama’s matchmaking, they decided the order with rock-paper-scissors.

“Alright, Shuto-san’s up. I’ll call you when it’s ready, so hang tight!”

“Yeah, I’m counting on you!”

“Leave it to me.”

◆◆◆

As I left the tent, Orcman approached, looking worried.

“Hey, Ceres, you sure about this? A ‘noble daughter’ type… sure, she’s pretty, but…”

“Yeah, you told me last time—‘classic dead weight, won’t help with chores, flaunts her education to belittle people,’ and ‘someone who pissed off royalty or high nobles,’ right?”

“If you know that, you wouldn’t normally recommend her to villagers.”

“Nah, it’s fine.”

Because it’s exactly the ideal type Shuto-san wanted.

I won’t let him complain later.

In the village, we only deal with the local lord, so there’s no worry about other nobles.

Plus, Shuto-san’s a villager, but he’s Maria the Saintess’s father.

Even if something happens, the other side would hesitate a bit.

“You’re really sure? Fine, I’ll vouch for her looks and smarts, but… she’s a criminal slave.”

“No big deal.”

I’m not actually thinking about revenge.

I didn’t pick a weirdo on purpose.

I just genuinely thought she’d suit Shuto-san.

◆◆◆

Rewind a bit.

“Are you really going to buy me?”

Normally, no one would buy her.

If anyone did, it’d be a noble—probably an enemy buying her to ‘torture and kill.’

After all, she killed an ‘upper noble’s daughter.’

“I won’t be the one living with you… it’s an acquaintance.”

Her face went pale.

“I knew it! Having someone else buy me, then taking me to be humiliated, tortured, and killed… haha, it’s over for me.”

Being made a criminal slave means legally ‘her sins are atoned.’ After that, the other side isn’t supposed to touch her or buy her. But there’s a loophole—having someone else buy her for them. That’s what she’s talking about.

“I’m not doing that. Sure, I’m a proxy, but the guy marrying you is just a regular guy, about 30.”

“Really? You’re not here to kill me?”

“The guy I’m introducing you to… he’s considered an intellectual in the village. I think he’s a good person at heart, but… he’s got a lot of quirks. If possible, I’d like you to help fix his personality.”

I want to believe Shuto-san’s not a bad guy, just a bit twisted.

His self-centered thinking’s the issue.

He’s lived in the village for generations, so he gets away with being ‘that jerk,’ but he’s kind of isolated.

Someone like her is perfect for him.

“I’ve killed someone, you know? And not just anyone—a high noble.”

“The noble world’s full of schemes. People only see the surface, but that’s just how it works, right? Achieving your goal is impressive. Your only mistake was ‘getting caught.’ For a 14-year-old, that’s amazing. If you’d covered it up, it probably would’ve benefited your house.”

“You’re awfully understanding… I can’t say why, but you’re right. I like you. Can’t I be your wife? ‘I’ll do anything.’”

“Haha, I’m flattered, but I’ve already got a wife, so no go. So, will you take it on?”

Sigh. “You’re asking, not ordering, even though I’m a slave. You’re my savior, so I’ll do it. And keep this secret from my new master, right?”

“That’d help.”

“I’ll guarantee his life, but I’m a ‘whip user.’ If you want me to fix him, I’ll really fix him. It’ll be tough on him. I’ll use drugs too. Of course, since you’re my benefactor, I won’t use ‘poison’ to kill him. But maybe a little, depending…”

A villainous noble daughter.

That phrase popped into my head.

“That’s fine.”

“You’re really kind. You chose me because you knew I’d either be bought by a noble I opposed or end up in a brothel for life as a former noble daughter. I won’t push it since I don’t want to trouble you, but ‘you’re my ideal.’ That won’t happen, though. Thank you for a life better than torture or a brothel.”

I do feel sympathy, that’s true.

But I haven’t done enough to earn that much gratitude.

“I’m not putting a slave tattoo on you, so discipline him well. If it’s too much, running away’s an option.”

“You’re too much… Fine, I’ll try. I might die before he’s fixed, but I’ll make sure he’s reformed. Don’t worry.”

“You’re guaranteeing his life, right?”

“Just a figure of speech. Leave it to me.”

“I’m counting on you.”

This girl’s perfect for Shuto-san.

◆◆◆

“Here she is.”

Orcman brought the slave for Shuto-san.

“I’m Charlotte. Pleased to meet you.”

Charlotte gracefully lifted her skirt in a curtsy.

Just that smile and greeting made Shuto-san’s face flush red.

“This girl… she’s really going to be my wife?”

“She to your liking?”

“Liking? She’s my ideal woman! I thought of you as a friend and a son, but… today, you’re beyond amazing… my best friend!”

“Shuto-san, I’m glad you’re moved, but you gotta greet her.”

“Right, right… I’m Shuto. Nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure’s mine.”

A noble daughter, Shuto’s dream girl. And Charlotte’s saved.

It’s a win-win for both.

For Shizuko-san and the others, I’ll say, “I chose someone to whip his character into shape.”

That shouldn’t cause any big issues.

If I explain the other reason, they’ll see it as revenge too.

Good luck, Shuto-san.

◆◆◆

I sent Shuto-san and Charlotte shopping like the elders.

“That’s four down. You’re a lifesaver,” Orcman said with a grin.

“Nah, you’re the one helping with the freebies and lending the tents.”

“You’re buying a ton. Least I can do is throw in some clothes.”

Orcman’s got serious trust with the slave traders.

He’s practically running the whole show this time.

The title ‘Slave Harem Adventurer’ ain’t for show.

He briefly joined a Hero’s party, earned multiple-marriage rights, then got kicked out.

Kinda like me.

I ran to Shizuko-san and the others; he ran to slaves.

Bit different, but I feel a kinship. I could get along with him better than Zect’s crew.

“Alright, I’ll bring the next one.”

“Yeah, I’m counting on you, Orcman.”

With that, he left the tent to fetch another slave.

◆◆◆

“Did Shuto’s match get settled? What’s she like?”

Kaito-san jumped me the second I got back to the tent.

Guess he’s curious since everyone else is out shopping or dating instead of waiting here.

“Not your type, that’s for sure. Kinda fits Shuto-san…”

“If she’s like that blue gourd, she ain’t my taste, so that’s fine.”

“I know your taste, Kaito-san. Big, hardworking, and boom-curvy-boom, right?”

“As expected of Ceres, you get me. I’m counting on you.”

“You got it.”

◆◆◆

As I started prepping the next setup, Orcman came back, looking worried again.

“Hey, Ceres, you sure? This one’s too much, even for me! A mercenary? Adventurers might handle it, but for a villager? And this one’s…”

“She’s ‘killed people,’ right? It’s just part of the job. Adventurers kill too—bandits, thieves.”

“Yeah, but… can a regular guy accept that?”

What I want for Kaito-san’s match is a woman who can ‘throw punches with him.’

Kaito-san’s always mouthing off, but it only stops because Sayo-san’s the submissive type.

A normal woman would’ve gotten hit.

So, his wife needs to be ‘hardworking, curvy, and able to brawl.’ That’s what I think.

I didn’t do it, but for adventurers or knights, fighting can spark love or friendship.

Kaito-san needs a woman he can bond with like that.

◆◆◆

Rewind a bit.

“You’re the one buying me?”

She’s another one with limited buyers.

A rowdy mercenary could cause trouble.

Even a slave tattoo won’t help if she kills before it activates.

If a seasoned mercenary or adventurer has a weapon… it might be too late.

So, owning a slave like her is risky unless ‘you’re a decent fighter yourself.’

She’d probably only be picked by D-rank or higher adventurers. Nobles or knights wouldn’t bother with ‘a mere mercenary.’

She’s a tough sell.

Well, that’s what Orcman told me.

“Yeah, but you won’t be living with me.”

“What? Not you? You’re kinda my type… oh well. So why me?”

“He’s a rough guy. Talks like crap, might even get violent.”

“Sounds like a total scumbag.”

“Yeah, but I don’t think he’s rotten at heart. I was an orphan, and he treated me like his own kid. He’s got a kind side.”

“I see. So what happens to me after I’m bought? I’ve only ever been a mercenary. Fighting’s all I know.”

“That’s what I wanted to ask. The guy I picked for you is strong but a farmer. You up for trying agriculture?”

She seems careless and rough, but she’s got this weird charm that draws people in.

I started calling her ‘you’ but ended up at ‘hey, you’ without noticing.

No offense, but becoming a mercenary—not even an adventurer—means she was probably dirt-poor with no other way to live.

Nobody picks a life of ‘death’ on purpose.

“You’re asking me to live a life besides fighting? Nobody’s ever wanted that. All anyone wants from me is ‘fighting’ or ‘my body.’”

“Uh… how old are you?”

“Fourteen. Why?”

Fourteen. To talk like this at that age… she’s had a hell of a life.

“Sorry… So, why’d you get sold as a slave?”

“I was an idiot. My comrades tricked me and sold me off. I fought like crazy, serviced them at night, and in the end—poof, tossed out.”

“I see. The guy I’m setting you up with is about 30. Probably a foul mouth, might hit you. That’s him. But one thing I can promise—you’ll live in a peaceful world, not a ‘killing’ one. How’s that?”

“Look, I was a mercenary. If he hits me, I’m punching back. I won’t kill him, but…”

“That’s perfect, isn’t it? He’s really kind at heart, just…”

“A clumsy guy… that what you’re saying?”

“Exactly.”

“Fine. I don’t hate clumsy or stubborn types. Beats staying here or getting bought for more fighting. If I can live a half-decent life, that’s enough. Better than dying as a mercenary someday.”

“Thanks, that helps.”

“So I just gotta fix his bad mouth and violent streak?”

“Yeah, do that… and keep your past quiet until you’re close.”

“Yeah, keep it secret, got it. I’ll whip him into shape mercenary-style.”

“Go easy on him. And study up on village life—it’ll help.”

“You sound like you’ve been through it.”

“Yeah, I’m a former orphan. If I hadn’t been born in that village, I’d have lived like you. That village is kind to the weak. You’ll find lots of new things there.”

“That so?”

“If you can’t fix him or it’s boring, feel free to run.”

“You’re nuts. That okay?”

“Yup, no slave tattoo, so escape if you want.”

“I keep my promises. Fine, I’ll make him stop mouthing off and hitting. Done.”

“Counting on you.”

“You’re Ceres, right? From the Hero’s party?”

“Ex-member…”

“Then it’s a warrior-to-warrior promise.”

“Yeah, I’m counting on you.”

“First time meeting, but you were my idol. Shame it’s not an invite to your crew. I’ll keep my promise, no matter what.”

Mercenaries aren’t as crude as people think.

They seem rough, but they’ve got their own pride.

I think she’s perfect for Kaito-san.

◆◆◆

“Here she is.”

“Nice to meet you, I’m Eleanor!”

A sharp, proper greeting with her back straight.

“Ceres… she’s super cute, ain’t she? Great figure, looks hardworking… I love her!”

“You like her?”

“Hell yeah! Never thought the guy I see as a son would set me up with a wife.”

“Kaito-san, greet her first.”

“Right, I’m Kaito. Nice to meet ya.”

“Same here.”

If things get heated, go ahead and slug it out.

A meek wife wouldn’t suit Kaito-san.

She’s gotta be tough, able to throw punches. That’s probably what he needed.

I’ve got a feeling it’ll work out.

For Sayo-san and Shizuko-san, I’ll say I picked someone tough enough to handle violence.

That should be fine.

◆◆◆

I sent Kaito-san and Eleanor to have fun in town.

“Man, you pick some weird slaves. And they’re spot-on. Ceres, you really never bought slaves before?”

Orcman said it with a mix of shock and disbelief, like I’m some oddity.

“Nope.”

This only worked because I know these people’s quirks.

I couldn’t do this for strangers.

“Alright, I’ll get the next girl.”

“Yeah, Orcman, I’m counting on you!”

He left the tent to fetch another slave.

◆◆◆

“Hey… Ceres, you sure I’m okay too?”

Looks like Sectol-ojisan’s up next.

He was fidgeting at the tent entrance.

“Yup, no problem. With everyone else getting matched, I can’t leave you out.”

“But I sold Shizuko as a slave, squandered my wealth, couldn’t pay taxes, and got sent to the mines. You bailed me out, and now a wife? Really okay?”

“Before all that, you were a good guy. Treat your new wife the way you treated me back then.”

“Got it. I’ll do it. Promise.”

“Alright, hang tight.”

◆◆◆

“Hey, Ceres, you serious? The others were one thing, but this… she’s the worst slave! Tests the master’s quality. Unless you’re dead-set on loving her forever, you don’t touch a beastman like her. Even I’d steer clear.”

Orcman’s such a worrier.

Of course, I know, and that’s why I chose her.

Among beastmen, the most jealous are the dog-types.

Other beastmen, being wilder, tend to lack attachment.

But dog-types—legend says demons or humans tamed and bred wolf-types for obedience.

Over generations, they were made to be loyal to their masters.

Along the way, an unintended trait emerged: jealousy.

They’re so devoted that if their master shows affection to someone else, it’s a disaster.

In the worst cases, they might even attack their master violently.

That’s why they’re usually ‘kept solo.’

Sure, some have multiple, but those are often siblings or pre-vetted matches.

To own a dog-type slave, you need ‘resolve to love only one woman.’

And the trickiest of them? The ‘Chiwan’ breed.

These beastmen are fiercely loyal, fearless even against dragons for their master.

But their possessiveness is off the charts.

Still, they’re among the cutest beastmen.

If you don’t cheat, you get a gorgeous girl who’ll pledge life-or-death loyalty.

Pretty great, right?

She’s perfect for Sectol-ojisan.

◆◆◆

Rewind a bit.

“Hey, big brother, you buying me?”

“Yup, but I’m setting you up with someone else.”

“Oh, got it. As long as they understand my breed and buy me, I’m good. Just… I’m…”

She trailed off, eyes downcast.

“I heard. You seriously injured your last master and his lover, right?”

“Yeah. I need to ‘always be the most loved.’ Keep that, and I’m fine. If you do, I’ll be great in bed and battle.”

“Well, bed aside, no battles. He’s just a villager.”

“Huh, a villager? He won’t cheat, will he?”

“Probably will.”

“That’s bad, right? I’ll go wild—bite, hit, you name it.”

“That’s what I want. I need you to fix his cheating habit. And his other bad traits, if you can.”

“Uh… that okay?”

“It’s fine. You dog-types are actually really kind, right? If you went all-out, you’d tear off limbs or snap necks. Even top adventurers would struggle to kill you. You’re called violent, but no one dies. That’s because you’re kind. From what I heard, your last master survived, right?”

“You know a lot about us… and you get it. Why don’t you buy me? If you love me, I’ll serve you like crazy.”

“That’s sweet, but I’m married, so no can do.”

“Got it. Oh well. My breed’s tough to sell, so I’d end up in the mines anyway. Keep this quiet and make sure he doesn’t cheat, right?”

“Yup, please. I’m skipping the slave tattoo, so go ahead and smack him if he cheats. If it’s too much, run away.”

“That’s crazy good terms. Alright, thanks.”

◆◆◆

“Here she is.”

Orcman brought Chiwa.

“Hi, I’m Chiwa!”

The second Sectol-ojisan saw her, his jaw practically hit the floor.

“Ceres, this super cute girl’s my match? You paid my taxes, and now this? I’ve only ever hurt you. My son Zect did awful stuff too, didn’t he?”

“Sectol-ojisan, you were kind to little me. You treated me like Zect. I love that about you. But there’s one thing I can’t forgive—your cheating. She’s adorable, right? She’ll be devoted to you. Just ‘super jealous and won’t forgive cheating.’ If you like her, rebuild your life together.”

“Yeah, someone like her’s better for me. No more cheating. Chiwa-san, I’m old, got no wealth… you okay with me?”

“I only need ‘love,’ so it’s fine… Just don’t cheat, and we’re good.”

“I’m Sectol. Nice to meet you.”

“Yup!”

Cheat, and you’re in for it, Sectol-ojisan… Good luck.

I said I don’t hate them, but maybe I held a grudge.

I picked someone who’ll make cheating impossible for him.

For Shizuko-san and the others, I’ll say, “I made sure he can never cheat again.”

Plus, looks-wise, Chiwa’s prettier than the other slaves.

If he doesn’t cheat, he’ll live happily.

He promised no cheating. That’s good, right?

◆◆◆

I sent Sectol-ojisan and Chiwa to have fun in town.Re.

Since he’s broke, I gave him some pocket money.

One more matchmaking-slave purchase left: Kazuma-niisan’s match.

Kazuma-niisan’s like a brother and a father to me.

Plus, he gave me Nee-san out of pure kindness.

I always caught him looking at her enviously… I can’t help thinking he gave her to me for that reason.

◆◆◆

I know what kind of slave Kazuma-niisan wants.

A ‘maid.’

“Kazuma-niisan’s the last one. You still want what you told me before, right?”

“Yeah, can you make it happen?”

“I’ve got a question.”

“About Haruka, right?”

“Kazuma-niisan, you really…”

“No need to say more. She’s happier with you than with me. That’s why I let her go. You know I’m a cooking nut. I’d run off for good ingredients, ignore Haruka for new recipes, and lock myself in the kitchen. Been doing that since we got married. We had one daughter—that’s how selfish I am. People called us lovebirds, but that was just Haruka putting me first, not doing what she wanted.”

“But…”

“Look, Haruka hits you a lot, right? She doesn’t hit me or anyone else. That’s her love language. Since you were a kid, you were special to her. She’s herself and happier with you than with me. This is fine.”

For Kazuma-niisan, cooking was number one. Nee-san was probably number two.

He knew it himself, so he made this choice.

That’s how it is.

◆◆◆

"Unlike before, she's quite an ordinary slave, isn't she? A maid who loves cooking, huh. Gahaha, that's a classic!"

What Kazuma-niisan really needs is someone who will walk the 'same path' as him.

There was no such person in the village.

That's why he ended up with Ane-san.

Ane-san can only cook 'decently' and doesn't seem particularly interested in it.

Come to think of it, I've never seen Ane-san step into the kitchen.

I must have forced her to go along with my dream.

Maybe that's the guilt Kazuma-niisan carries.

◆◆◆

A Little Earlier

"Will you be purchasing me?"

"That's the plan."

"Just so there's no trouble later, I should tell you—I can't do anything but cook."

Indeed, that seems to be the case.

She served as a maid in a great noble's household.

But unlike other maids, she specialized solely in cooking.

Maids serving great nobles or royalty often start with various tasks but eventually specialize in one. Many maids in such households follow a 'one-point luxury' philosophy.

For example, if they're good at cleaning, they clean from morning to night.

If they're skilled at cooking, they cook from morning to night.

There are maids who can do everything, but they're rare.

More common are maids who excel perfectly in one area but aren't skilled in others.

"I heard about that. The person I'm introducing you to is someone who lives for 'cooking' above all else. So, loving cooking is the most important thing. Most of your conversations will probably be about cooking."

"Then I'm confident! I've been in service since I was eight, and for seven years until I was fifteen, I helped with cooking from morning to night. The head chef even said, 'Your cooking and presentation have elegance.' But I'm completely useless at anything else. I can't clean or do laundry at all."

"That’s fine. That's exactly the kind of person he wants."

"What a relief… Most men expect maids to handle all household chores, so I was left unsold. Thank goodness…"

This girl will surely be to Kazuma-niisan's liking.

And… it'll make him appreciate Ane-san more. Yes, it's perfect.

◆◆◆

"Here she is."

Orcman brought her to our tent.

"Pleased to meet you. My name is Mary."

As expected of a maid who served nobles, even if cooking is her main skill, her etiquette is impeccable.

"Ceres, she’s very much my type in appearance, but… is it alright?"

"No problem at all. Mary was in charge of cooking in a great noble's household and was even praised by the head chef. She can assist you, Kazuma-niisan, and I bet you’ll have lively conversations about cooking."

"I see. That’s reassuring. Mary-san, I love cooking and think about it all the time. If you take cooking away from me, there’s nothing left. Is that alright with you?"

"I’ve spent almost my entire life cooking. It’s all I can do… Is that acceptable?"

"That’s my ideal. I look forward to working with you."

"Yes."

With this, everyone has their ideal slave.

In a way, it’s a thank-you, and in a way, a bit of revenge on Zect and the others.

◆◆◆

I owe Kazuma-niisan so much, so I chose his ideal slave.

But I left one issue for the future.

I believe a married couple needs to support each other.

'I feel bad for making Ane-san go along with my selfishness.' That’s Kazuma-niisan’s kindness, but also a big misunderstanding.

I think Ane-san bet everything on Kazuma-niisan.

In a relationship, one person has to be the supporter for it to work.

If one chases their dream, the other has to support them, or they can’t stay together.

It’s similar to the relationship between a Hero and a Saintess.

The Hero fights and gets wounded, and the Saintess heals them.

If both were healers, they couldn’t fight. If both were fighters, wounds would be fatal.

So, Kazuma-niisan and Ane-san were actually an ideal couple.

But Kazuma-niisan wanted a 'comrade' to walk the same path.

He’ll probably struggle.

There’s no one to support him with cleaning or laundry.

Well, one of them will have to compromise, or they can hire a third party.

'To make him realize Ane-san’s importance.'

If I explain it like that to Shizuko-san and the others, there shouldn’t be any issues.

◆◆◆

The busy slave-buying, or rather, matchmaking, was over, and I thanked Orcman.

"Buyers don’t usually say thanks. You bought seven slaves, Ceres. You’re a great customer."

"Well, I’m glad I could contribute to your sales."

Come to think of it, meeting Shizuko-san might have been thanks to Orcman.

Orcman is known as the man with a slave harem, but he treats all his slaves as wives and is famous as a devoted husband.

Having lost all my childhood friends, I wanted someone who would love me without betraying me.

Hearing rumors about Orcman might have led me to the slave trader.

My meeting with Shizuko-san wouldn’t have happened without Orcman.

In a way… he’s a benefactor.

"Thank you!"

"No, thank you, Orcman. You helped a lot. If you’re ever in trouble, let me know."

"What’re you talking about?"

"Nothing, never mind."

This is just my personal gratitude to Orcman. That’s all.

If he’s ever in trouble, I’ll help however I can.

◆◆◆

We’re heading to the village in two large carriages.

For some reason, everyone separated from their slaves and rode in the same carriage.

"Wouldn’t it be better to sit with your partners to bond?"

That’s what I suggested, but…

"We’ve got some things to discuss… And it’s dangerous for the women, so we’d like you to guard them, Ceres."

"If that’s the case…"

Of course, nothing happened, and we arrived at the village safely.

Now the real challenge begins.

◆◆◆

After parting with the village chief and the others, I returned home to find Shizuko-san and the others waiting.

"What’s the meaning of this, Ceres-kun? Such cute girls!"

"Hey… Ceres. What’s the point of buying cute slaves?"

"Ceres-san… Please explain!"

"Ceres-chan, what’s going on?"

Oh no, Shizuko-san and the others aren’t smiling at all.

It’s a bit scary.

"Alright, I’ll explain. First, I chose elves as wives for Najim-sama and the advisors simply to make Zect jealous. No matter how much Zect, now a Hero, might want it, he can’t have it. Marriage with demi-humans, owning demi-human slaves—those are forbidden for the protector of humanity, the Hero. A Hero can’t own slaves either. For Zect, who’s admired elves since childhood, this will be a bitter pill."

Since childhood, Zect loved elves. If a mere village chief fulfills a dream Zect can’t, he’ll be frustrated.

"That makes sense. But, Ceres-kun, what about the others? Especially Sectol’s case—it’s strange."

"Sectol’s wife is from the dog tribe, among the most jealous of beastmen. They absolutely won’t forgive infidelity. If he cheats, he might lose three fingers at worst. That’s his punishment for selling Shizuko-san. He’ll never cheat again. And, sorry to my childhood friends, but she’s prettier than those three. Zect will surely be jealous. If his father has a beautiful wife around the same age as his lover, won’t that sting?"

"So, Sectol can never cheat again. And her appearance does seem like Zect’s type… But I’m still not convinced."

Why does Shizuko-san look so conflicted?

"Ceres-san… Then what about that person?"

"Sayo-san, I think Kaito-san was harsh to you because you’re gentle and obedient. As revenge, Kaito-san’s wife is a mercenary. Her mouth is worse than his, and if it comes to violence, she’s strong enough to break his arm. Kaito-san can’t defy her anymore and will live under her thumb. How’s that?"

"So… he can’t be rude or arrogant anymore. That’s how it is."

She’s looking at me with eyes that say, 'I’m not satisfied.'

"That’s right."

"Ceres-chan, there’s something about my case too, right?"

"Shoot-san’s partner is a noble’s daughter. No matter how intellectual Shoot-san is, he can’t compete with the 'real thing.' It’ll be a tough life. His only pride, his knowledge, won’t win. Plus, she’s trained in self-defense, so he can’t win with force either. It’ll be a hard life, won’t it?"

"So… he probably won’t recover from that."

Misaki-san too. She’s deep in thought, adjusting her glasses.

"Ceres, what about Kazuma’s partner?"

"A maid who served nobles and can only cook."

"That’s Kazuma’s ideal, isn’t it?"

"It’s Kazuma-niisan’s ideal, but… what he really needs isn’t someone who can cook, but someone who can handle accounting, cleaning, and daily chores. He’ll struggle. I chose her to make him appreciate the value of support."

"I see. That makes sense."

Ane-san’s face says she understands, but her eyes aren’t smiling.

Maybe none of them are convinced.

"But it’s kind of lackluster, Ceres-kun."

"Ceres, is that all?"

"Ceres-san."

"Ceres-chan."

Ugh, I knew this wouldn’t be enough.

Good thing I prepared another excuse.

"Look closely at those girls. Don’t they remind you of someone?"

"No way… That’s…"

"Oh, I see!"

"That’s incredible!"

"My, my."

The common trait among the women I chose—they vaguely resemble 'their daughters.'

Girls would absolutely hate it… their fathers being lovey-dovey with girls their age who look like them. Could they return to such a home?

Especially without their mothers there!

They wouldn’t want to stay in a house like that.

This is a revenge we didn’t need to take, so this should be enough.

"This is fine, right? After this, if we leave the village, Zect and the others will lose their place. Then, we’ll properly register with the guild, except for Shizuko-san, and live happily."

"So, what’s your plan, Ceres-kun?"

"Let’s go to the capital and live happily. With five of us, it’ll be fun."

"“““Ceres(-kun)(-san)(-chan)”””"

◆◆◆

The next morning, we set off for the capital.

Shizuko-san and the others seem to have accepted it.

Perhaps because I arranged marriages for Najim-sama and the others, the entire village saw us off.

From now on, we’ll cast aside our burdens and live happily. That’s all.
