[ENG] The Exiled Baron’s Son’s Magnificent Territory Reform: My Piece-of-Trash Father Called Me Useless, but I’m the World's Strongest Dragon Mage Volume 1 Chapter 2

Chapter 2:The Battle of Manntester

The following day, Belter was captured by the knights Sebas had arranged. Under subsequent harsh interrogation, several other traitors were exposed and brought to justice in a chain reaction.

Traitors were also found scattered within the knight order itself and were thrown into cells one by one. Naturally, they were rounded up by the hand of an infuriated Captain Silva himself.

“Good work, Sebas. And you as well, Silva.”

““Yes, my lord!””

“Especially you, Silva. I heard you were forced to do a lot of unpleasant work by the former lord’s orders. It must have been incredibly difficult for a man as serious as you. Allow me to apologize on behalf of the previous head. I am truly sorry.”

“!!”

For Silva, who could never imagine the previous head, Gray, bowing his head, being apologized to by Ryuu—his master and a noble—was an incredibly fresh and deeply moving experience.

A true master has finally appeared... That was the thought in his mind.

“No, no... I was the one who couldn't lend a hand to you and the others, Lord Ryuu... If anyone should apologize, it’s me. Besides, as Captain, I failed to notice the traitors in our ranks. It was a blunder that would justify my immediate dismissal...”

“Then let’s call it even for this time. I need you to keep working hard for this house. I can’t have you quitting yet. You are an irreplaceable asset.”

“Understood...!!”

Sebas changed the subject.

“Lord Ryuu. Forgive me for interrupting, but how shall we handle the 'Baron Manntester situation'?”

“Ah... This incident has revealed that our neighbor is meddling in our affairs. However, when dealing with a noble house of equal rank, we must move with caution.”

“I never would have dreamed we were being targeted by Manntester.”

“I agree,” Ryuu said. “I was so focused on internal matters that I didn't pay enough attention to external movements. I must reflect on that...”

The interrogation of Belter’s faction had revealed the mastermind behind the incident. That mastermind was none other than the House of Baron Manntester.

They were a barony of similar size, located adjacent to the Ardren territory. A much larger rat than expected had been caught in the trap. The Captain asked with a grim expression.

“What are your thoughts, Lord Ryuu?”

“According to the interrogation, the Manntester family has been using internal moles to conduct thorough information manipulation for about four years now.”

“That was the year Lady Airisu fell ill and was banished to the villa along with us and Lord Ryuu,” Sebas noted.

“Correct. Since then, I’ve been acting as the territory’s manager, and the occasional discrepancies in information we’ve faced were all Manntester's doing. They’ve been very calculated in their efforts to weaken our territory. And what lies beyond that—is war with House Ardren. Don't you both agree?”

““!?!?””

The two were speechless.

“It is true that espionage between noble houses is strictly forbidden as it sparks conflict, but...”

“To think they were actually planning for war...”

“Think about it. Why else would Baron Manntester plant so many moles in our house just for simple harassment? He knew that if even one was caught, conflict would be unavoidable,” Ryuu explained.

Ryuu was essentially saying that Baron Manntester had executed this plan with a certain level of resolve.

““............””

“Baron Manntester isn't a fool. Now that the incompetent previous head is gone and the moles have been rooted out, he knows he can’t count on our territory weakening any further. If he’s really going to strike Ardren...”

““It would be now,”” they both finished.

“Exactly. Now, while the leadership has changed and we’re still in the middle of the chaotic transition. ...That said, they’ll need to conduct a detailed survey of Ardren’s terrain and military strength before a war, so a declaration of war will likely come in two or three months.”

No fool launches a war on land they don't understand. At worst, their march would be halted. They still had plenty of time to formulate a strategy.

“However, there’s a possibility the enemy has already grasped the terrain and formulated a strategy. So, let’s start making our own plans early.”

Though I doubt it’s come to that yet.

If any knights had been sent for a terrain survey, Fyodor and his hunters, who fly through the forest like it’s their own backyard day and night, would have told him. But there had been no such reports.

Ryuu spoke in a heavy tone.

“You two. If war does break out, we will repel Manntester, counter-attack, and seize everything they own.”

“An excellent idea!! My old bones are starting to tingle with excitement!” Sebas declared.

“Hahaha, as expected of Lord Ryuu. I take it you intend to use the seized funds for the Elixir?”

“That said, if they aren't looking for a fight, I won’t force one. For now, let’s proceed with the steady development of the territory as planned. I’m counting on you both.”

““Yes, my lord!!””

Afterward, all information regarding Manntester was classified.

However, Ryuu decided to explain the situation to Dylan, the head of intelligence, and Chief Fyodor to keep an eye on Manntester’s movements. As for Dylan, Ryuu had him infiltrate the Manntester Barony to gather information directly.

As for the captured Manntester moles, they were subjected to further interrogation for more information before finally being executed in the town square by Captain Silva.

Belter and the other servants, who had been especially cruel in inflating product prices, were pelted with stones by their victims like a torrential rain.

◇ ◇ ◇

For the next month, House Ardren worked themselves to the bone on numerous reforms, steadily regaining the trust of the people.

Currently, the territory is remarkably stable compared to the time of the previous head. However, as part of the reforms, tax rates were significantly lowered, resulting in a decrease in tax revenue, so the Baronial coffers remain light. As for the mother, Airisu, her health has improved considerably thanks to the efforts of the maids and doctors.

However, this is merely buying time, so Ryuu finds himself almost wishing for Manntester to hurry up and declare war.

“I’m sorry, everyone. Making you take care of a sick person like me.”

“We were allowed to stay in this mansion after having our past sins forgiven. We can never repay you, Lady Airisu.”

“Indeed. Even if this body should perish, I will serve by your side for the rest of my life.”

“Ufufu. You’re exaggerating. I’m not even that angry, but you’re all so serious.”

Ryuu said he wouldn't execute them, but promotions were a different story.

How they chose to support Airisu from now on would determine their wages. Everything depended on how Lady Airisu perceived them. As for the younger sister, Rena, she had been asked by Ryuu to 'take the entrance exam for the Imperial Academy next year,' so she was currently buried in her studies in her room.

The Imperial Academy is the nation’s most prestigious educational institution, open only to exceptional students aged thirteen and older who pass the exam.

In Ryuu’s case, he had been cynical since childhood, so he naturally hadn’t taken the exam and had no plans to do so.

“For Ryuu-niisama... for Ryuu-niisama... for my beloved Ryuu-niisama... Haa, haa.”

I’ll definitely pass, and then he’ll pat my head a lot. And then, after that... Ehehehe...

For the record, Rena had a severe brother complex.

At that time, Ryuu was in the meeting room with Sebas, drafting a plan for the war against Manntester.

“Hmm... Rena seems to be working hard today too.”

“Wait, you can tell? From this distance?”

“We’re siblings, after all.”

“I-I see.”

Ryuu was just as obsessed with his sister as she was with him.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

About a month and a half had passed since Ryuu took over the barony.

The territorial reforms were proceeding as planned, and there was now almost no one who harbored doubts about the new lord.

Furthermore, the previous incident was being forgotten over time, and not only the citizens but also the Adventurers’ and Commerce Guilds began to reconsider their ties with House Ardren.

And just the other day, a report came in from one of Fyodor’s hunter groups that they had spotted several terrain surveyors dispatched from Manntester.

Ardren now recognized that war was an inevitability.

“Good morning, my lord.”

“Morning.”

Ryuu raised a hand in greeting to the maid. He continued a few steps and opened the door to the meeting room.

“Sorry I’m late.”

Sebas and Silva were already there.

“Not at all, we’ve only just arrived ourselves.”

“Please, don't mind us.”

Ryuu took his seat at the head of the table.

“Let’s begin, then. The strategy meeting against Manntester.”

““Yes!””

The gag order regarding the Manntester Barony had not yet been lifted.

Depending on the results of this meeting, they planned to announce the situation to the Adventurers’ Guild first, followed by the Commerce Guild, and then the townspeople.

Why the guilds first? Simply put, to secure military and material support.

Ryuu estimated that House Ardren’s forces alone could put up a fight, but since there is no such thing as a sure victory in war, he decided to seek the guilds' cooperation just to be safe. By the way, yesterday, his mother Airisu had cornered him, saying, 'Let me join the meeting too.'

While having his brilliant mother participate was a dream come true, he had to consider her health and settled for getting a few pieces of advice from her on the spot.

A military council takes more of a toll on one’s stamina than one might imagine.

However, in exchange, his mother would be in charge of governing Manntester’s lands after they were seized.

This allowed Ryuu to focus solely on the battle, killing two birds with one stone.

Even now, his mother was likely gathering competent servants in her room and holding her own lively meeting.

Silva asked.

“If I may be blunt, Lord Ryuu, what kind of tactics do you intend to use to defeat Manntester? Last time, you mentioned focusing on defense to wear the enemy down before transitioning to the offensive. Has that changed?”

“The core strategy remains the same. I’ll proceed based on that premise. First, judging from where the terrain surveyors were spotted, the routes they’ll use to attack us are narrowed down to two: through the forest and along the highway. I believe they will strike from both.”

“I agree.”

“Therefore, I will have eighty percent of the knight order standby on the highway, and the remaining twenty percent along with the adventurers will be stationed near the forest entrance.”

“...E-Excuse me?”

It was only natural for Silva to voice his doubt. The distribution was undeniably lopsided.

Ryuu continued, unbothered.

“Just between us, I’m even considering leaving the forest entirely to the adventurers and sending the entire knight order to the highway.”

“P-Please, tell us the reason for this.”

“The period Manntester spent surveying the forest was two weeks at most. In that time, they couldn't even grasp the basics of the woods. No, there's no way they could. I know this because I know that forest inside and out. From that, I infer that instead of a head-on fight in the forest, it’s far more efficient to set traps in advance and lure them into 'danger zones'.”

“Danger zones?”

“Simply put, monster nests.”

“I see. But can you really lure them that effectively?”

“Of course I can. How many years do you think I’ve been frequenting that forest?”

Well, I’m planning to get plenty of help from Fyodor and his men, too.

Though he hadn't said it here, Ryuu had already run through the simulations in his head numerous times.

The results showed that this strategy offered the highest probability of victory.

Sebas gave a smug little snort.

“Well, there isn't anyone in this world who can argue with Lord Ryuu on this matter. Neither in terms of experience nor intellect... wouldn't you say?”

“But if we lose, we’ll be invaded!”

“We are keeping twenty percent of the knights and all the adventurers on standby, so it shouldn't be a problem,” Sebas pointed out.

“That may be true... but I cannot accept this.”

Silva’s point was perfectly valid. But Sebas continued.

“By the way, Lord Ryuu, in what capacity do you intend to participate?”

“I plan to lead the forest side. If the enemy is planning any tricks, they’re most likely to try them there.”

“I see. Well, if Lord Ryuu is participating, then everything will be fine.”

“And so, Sebas will look after the mansion, and Silva, I’m counting on you to lead the highway defense group. Specifically, you’ll be the one marching into Manntester after we crush their army, so make sure they’re tightly disciplined.”

“Understood.”

“Y-Yes, sir.”

What in the world is Sebas-dono thinking...? No matter how brilliant Lord Ryuu may be, he’s still just a fourteen-year-old boy with no war experience. And according to what I’ve heard, he can't even use magic, which is a noble’s greatest advantage. Does he possess some kind of incredible leadership ability to make up for it...?

The meeting continued, but Silva couldn't just swallow his doubts.

“Lord Ryuu.”

“What is it?”

“I agree with the operation itself, but I still cannot accept the troop allocation.”

“You mean the part about only sending twenty percent of the knights to the forest?”

“Precisely.”

“Hmm. Then what will it take for you to agree?”

“Well... just increasing the ratio would be enough...”

Sebas clapped his hands.

“Why don't you and Lord Ryuu have a little sparring match, Captain Silva?”

“Wha—?!”

Silva’s eyes widened. It was a natural reaction. But contrary to Silva, Ryuu was in favor of the idea.

“That might actually be a good idea.”

“If you knew that the 'Strongest Force in Ardren' would be joining twenty percent of the knights and all the adventurers, even you would have to agree, Captain Silva,” Sebas added.

“The strongest force in Ardren...? Are you saying that you won't just be commanding, but wielding a weapon yourself?”

“Yeah, that’s the plan.”

Upon hearing Ryuu’s response, Silva clenched his fists and began to tremble quietly.

“Ry-Lord Ryuu. With all due respect, I think you shouldn't take war... no, combat, so lightly. I don't know why Sebas-dono has been so supportive, but from my perspective as the Knight Captain, you are as green as they come. You may be exceptional for your age, but you are drastically overestimating yourself. To go so far as to call yourself the strongest...”

“Well, I guess we’ll find out once we cross blades, won't we?”

“............!!”

Does this lord really intend to fight me, the Knight Captain?!

And then, Silva declared quietly.

“Then I shall personally correct that naive thinking of yours!!!”

“Good. I’m looking forward to it.”

About an hour later.

In the center of the training grounds, the battered Captain lay on the ground, while an uninjured Ryuu stood beside him.

“Haa... haa...

“............”

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

The office of the Baron Manntester.

A middle-aged man sat alone on a high-end sofa, enjoying some premium liquor.

“Kuh-fufu. Drinking in the middle of the day is truly something else.”

The man was as fat as a pig, and his hairline was looking rather unfortunate.

Despite that, he was covered from head to toe in sparkly accessories, making for quite a tacky display.

This man was none other than Baron Manntester himself.

In the room, a single maid was busily cleaning. She had been forced into a maid uniform with very little surface area, so her undergarments peeked out every time she moved.

This alone was enough to get a sense of Baron Manntester’s character.

The maid accidentally knocked over an empty wine bottle, shattering it.

CRASH!!!

“Ah...”

The high-pitched sound apparently didn't sit well with him, as the Baron reached out his thick hand and grabbed a whip.

“How dare a filthy slave like you disturb my bliss!! Die!! Die!! I’ll skin you alive and put you on display in the square, you incompetent brat!!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please forgive me... I won't fail again...”

But the whip didn't stop. It continued to strike until blood sprayed.

Ah, this is the kind that doesn't end until I’m dead. Another one died last week, I guess I just have to give up.

—Just then.

“Boss, you called for us~?”

Three men entered the room.

“Oh, you lot! I’ve been waiting!”

The Baron’s expression shifted into a smile as if nothing had happened.

“Calling us means it’s happening, right? The war.”

“Indeed. Two weeks from now, I will issue a declaration of war to Ardren.”

“We’re getting paid properly, right?”

“Of course! Lately, I have more money than I know what to do with. I’ll be generous.”

“Alright, we’ll make sure our work matches the price. Just make sure you don't mention this to the Adventurers’ Guild, okay? This is a black-market deal that bypasses the guild. If we’re caught, we’ll be expelled, or worse, put on the most-wanted list. Keep that in mind.”

“I know. Let’s keep this information strictly between us.”

“Well, we’ll head out then. Send a messenger to that inn once the details are set.”

With that, the trio of apparent adventurers left the room.

“Kuh-fufu... With this, Ardren will be mine...!!”

The Baron turned his gaze to the maid cowering in the corner.

“You, get out of the room already!! Don't disturb the afterglow of my triumph!!”

“Y-Yes, sir!”

I’m saved... I’m saved...!! I don't know who you are, but thank you, old men!!

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Two weeks later, at the usual tavern.

“Phew~ That first drink after work is the best!”

“The amount of food and booze is back to what it used to be, so we can eat our fill every day!”

The place was crowded with adventurers who had just returned from their morning shifts.

“I was worried when the lord suddenly changed... but I never thought things would turn out so well!”

“Right?! Long live the young Baron!”

Just then, an adventurer burst through the door with a loud bang. The master didn't say anything, likely because he was a regular known for his good nature.

“Hey, everyone! Huge news!”

The adventurers who had been enjoying their drinks fell silent, listening to what he had to say.

—And then.

“Baron Manntester apparently declared war on Baron Ardren!!!”

“““““!?!?”””””

The unexpected news sent the place into a frenzy.

“Manntester? That’s the noble house in the neighboring territory, right?!”

“Why now, of all times?!”

“Ardren shouldn't have done anything to earn their resentment...”

“Is that even true?! You’re not making this up, are you?!”

“Making it up? It was just officially announced by the guild!!!”

At those words, the tavern became even rowdier.

Even the master stopped wiping his glass, cold sweat dripping down his face.

It was a natural reaction.

Just when the Ardren territory was finally recovering from a long period of recession, the neighboring territory was launching a war.

It was one thing after another, and they weren't the only ones shaken by this development.

The entire territory was in an uproar.

However, there was one party of adventurers who remained perfectly calm.

“They finally declared war, then.”

“Indeed. It is slightly later than the Baron’s prediction.”

“Thinking about it another way, doesn't that mean the enemy used that time to prepare even more thoroughly~?”

“Kyahaha!! War, war~♪”

“Let us hurry to the Branch Manager.”

They were the B-rank party that was the pride of the Ardren branch of the Adventurers’ Guild. As the guild’s top fighters, they had been informed in advance, so they didn't seem particularly panicked. If anything, they were already moving on to their next action. They were truly seasoned veterans.

Afterward, as this news spread not only within the territory but to the surrounding regions, long lines formed of people moving to other noble territories for safety and those returning to Ardren to defend their home, crossing paths on the highway.

While a grim atmosphere hung over the entire territory, at the House of Baron Ardren...

“Ryuu-niisama, I want to learn magic too!”

“I see. You’re twelve now, Rena, so it might be a good time to start studying magic. But the Imperial Academy entrance exam doesn't have a practical portion, you know? ...Is that still okay?”

As Ryuu said, the entrance exam for the Imperial Academy was written only. Because of that, most students took their first practical lessons after enrolling.

“Yes!! I thought that if I practiced magic now, I’d have a huge advantage before I even start!!”

“Thinking on the premise that you’ll pass... as expected of my sister. Right, Sebas?”

“Indeed. Lady Rena also carries the blood of the brilliant Lady Airisu, so while it is only natural, her ability to put in the effort is truly wonderful. I have no doubt she will go down in history as a great figure one day.”

“I completely agree.”

“Ehehehe.”

Of course, the difficulty of the written exam was astronomically high precisely because there was no practical portion...

Well, I’m sure Rena will be fine.

“Alright, Rena. I’ll give you a magic tome I’ve edited later, so give it a look. Once I hear your thoughts, I’ll decide whether to hire a magic tutor or if I’ll teach you personally.”

“I want Ryuu-niisama to do it!”

“But I’m not very good at teaching.”

“I want Ryuu-niisama!”

“Sigh... fine.”

“Yay!!”

Sebas watched the scene with the eyes of a doting grandfather.

Fufufu. How heartwarming.

Just then, Silva came rushing in. Judging by his tense face, he was quite flustered. He shouted, which was rare for him.

“Lord Ryuu, the army formation is complete!! We can march at any time!!”

“Oh, Silva. Good work.”

“You certainly are calm...”

Sebas said, stroking his beard.

“We’ve been preparing for two months under Lord Ryuu’s guidance, after all. We were just waiting for the declaration, so there’s no need to panic.”

“But this isn't just a simple skirmish! This is a bloodbath that concerns the prestige of both houses, and if you go back centuries, their pride! The whole Empire will be watching!”

“You were the one who told the knights to 'Always stay calm in battle' just the other day, weren't you? If you’re like this as the leader, the army won't hold together.”

“Urgh... Sebas-dono is right. My apologies.”

Silva then turned his gaze toward Rena, who still hadn't lost her smile.

These two aside, even Lady Rena... what is going on with the Ardren family?

“Lady Rena.”

“Yes? What is it, Captain Silva?”

“Forgive me for being blunt, but do you not feel any nervousness or fear? This is about to be an actual war.”

“I’m not scared at all, though...”

“May I ask why?”

“Eh, there’s only one reason.”

Rena paused for a moment and said clearly.

“Because Ryuu-niisama said it would be okay.”

“!?!?”

Just who is Lord Ryuu to command such absolute trust? I know from the reforms and the mock battle that his intellect and combat skills are exceptional, but even so, this is abnormal. This isn't just trust; it might be more accurate to call it a form of faith. Like the gods of myth, or the 'Dragons' who govern the heavens...

Silva was once again overwhelmed by the strange atmosphere unique to the Ardren family.

“Oh my. It sounds like a fun conversation is going on here.”

“Oh, Mother.”

“Mother!!”

Rena hugged her mother.

“My Rena is so cute again today~”

“Ehehehe.”

Everyone present knew the details of the plan, so they each understood what they needed to do. Because of that, they didn't talk for long.

“Well then, let’s begin. The war with Manntester.”

At Ryuu’s words, everyone nodded deeply.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Several days had passed since the Baron Manntester issued its declaration of war.

In that time, the news had rippled outward like a stone cast into a pond, becoming the hottest topic across the entire Empire. Nearby nobles scrambled to establish defensive lines just in case the sparks of conflict jumped their borders, while those further away watched from the sidelines with heightened vigilance.

In the distant corners of the Empire, far beyond the reach of the flames of war, the common folk were positively giddy. It had been a long time since they’d seen a proper scrap between nobles, and many were treating it like a spectator sport. There were even fools running betting pools on the outcome.

Naturally, word eventually reached the ears of the woman who reigned at the very pinnacle of the Astoria Empire—the Empress herself.

"Your Majesty. We have received confirmation that the Baron Manntester has officially declared war on the Ardren Baronry."

"Ardren..." Empress Iris mused. "That’s the house that recently saw a change in leadership, isn't it? If I recall, the new Baron is remarkably young."

"Indeed, Your Majesty. The current head of the house is fourteen-year-old Ryuu Ardren."

"Hmm... Young. Far too young. Baron  Manntester has a nasty streak in him. Have our spies lurking in the frontier reported anything?"

"Right here, Your Majesty."

The Empress scanned the report before passing it to the Prime Minister standing at her side. After a moment of silence, she turned to him.

"Prime Minister. How do you see this conflict playing out?"

"Personally? I believe a Manntester victory is a foregone conclusion."

"Oh? And your reasoning?"

"House Ardren has been in a state of terminal decline since the previous generation," the Prime Minister explained. "The former head left behind a mountain of debt before passing the title on after an unfortunate accident. While the new Baron seems to have made some frantic efforts over the past month... it’s hard to imagine they’ve made a full recovery. I don’t have the exact troop numbers for either side, but for Baron Manntester to declare war now, he must have seen a clear path to victory.

"For those reasons, the general consensus—myself included—leans toward Manntester. I imagine the more unscrupulous merchants are already raking in the coins on bets for their victory."

The Empress narrowed her eyes. "...Is that how it looks to you?"

"Does Your Majesty have a different perspective?"

"I do."

"Then I would be honored to hear it."

"Officially, the succession was prompted by an 'unfortunate accident,'" the Empress said, her voice dropping an octave. "But to me, it looked more like an assassination... or rather, a purge. The movements following the change in leadership have been too swift, too precise. Usually, a change in house head is a messy affair that bogs a family down for months. Yet what did they do? The very day after the 'accident,' they announced sweeping reforms and produced visible results within a mere month. Furthermore, they haven't flinched at Manntester’s declaration. They are responding with calculated calm. And this isn't the work of some grizzled veteran noble, but a fourteen-year-old boy. Ho-ho... This is getting interesting."

"In short, you believe Ardren will win?" the Prime Minister asked. "But Your Majesty, if he were truly a talent of that caliber, surely he would have made a name for himself by now. If we had more information on him, it might be a different story, but..."

"That is precisely the problem," she replied. "For some reason, the information available on Ryuu Ardren is suspiciously scarce compared to other noble children. It feels... unnatural."

"It may be late in the game, but shall I dispatch spies to Ardren? We could treat them as we do the Great Noble Houses."

The current intel had come from spies stationed in the neighboring Margraviate of Grace. A tiny, backwater noble territory next to a Great House had been off the radar for centuries. Now, both the Empress and the Prime Minister were beginning to regret that oversight.

"Do it. And send your best operative."

"Understood. At once." The Prime Minister bowed and immediately began barking orders to the civil officials.

"The outcome will tell us whose prediction was correct," the Empress said. "Until then, we must be patient."

"While I would prefer to watch this unfold comfortably from the castle, I shall summon an Imperial Mage just in case. The possibility of some fool trying to take advantage of the chaos is never zero."

In the Astoria Empire, a "Imperial Mage" referred to a mage who had achieved great feats and been personally decorated by the Emperor. All were sworn to absolute loyalty, acting as the hands and feet of Empress Iris. It was said they operated in the shadows across the entire continent. While their total numbers were unknown, several were world-renowned. For example...

"Summon 'Deep Sea.' He should be stationed in the capital right now."

"As you wish."

Rumor had it that a single Imperial Mage could match an entire nation's army. Their status in the Empire was equal to or greater than that of the Commander of the Imperial Knights.

The only reason the Astoria Empire permitted internal squabbles between nobles was because of their existence. It was a silent message to the world: 'The Imperial Army and our Imperial Mages are more than enough to handle any war.' To other nations, it was terrifying. The fact that the total number of Imperial Mages remained a state secret only added to the dread. In the realm of psychological warfare, the Empire was peerless.

This was why the current Empress, Iris Astoria, was hailed as a Wise Emperor.

The Empress uncorked a bottle of high-end wine and poured herself a glass.

"It’s rare to see Your Majesty indulging in spirits during the day," the Prime Minister remarked.

"It’s unlike me, I know, but I find myself... intrigued. Forgive me."

"It has been a while since I've seen you unable to reach an immediate conclusion."

"Yes. It’s been years since I felt this 'uncertain.' When things are this unclear, what else is there to do but drink? Care for a glass?"

"I am beyond honored by the invitation, Your Majesty... but I must decline with a heavy heart. I still have duties to attend to."

"Always so serious."

"I pride myself on it being my only redeeming quality," the Prime Minister said with a wry smile.

"You don't say."

The Empress took a sip of her wine, her thoughts drifting to the frontier.

(I wonder how this battle will end... Don't disappoint me, Ryuu Ardren.)

Hidden in the shadows, someone was eavesdropping on their conversation. She possessed a face that would make anyone turn their head, flowing pink hair, and a figure that could only be described as the golden ratio. But most importantly, she had the sharp, piercing eyes that marked the Astoria bloodline.

She was the First Princess of the Astoria Empire—Elina Astoria.

(The Baron Manntester declared war on Ardren?! But that’s where he is...!!)

(Still, it sounds like the current Baron Ardren is an incredible man. I’ve never heard Mother praise someone like that before. Lord Baron... please, save him. I'm counting on you...!!)

"Please, stay safe—my Prince."

It seemed the Princess had some history with House Ardren, but what exactly that entailed... remained a mystery.

◇ ◇ ◇

The day of the opening battle arrived.

The highway connecting Ardren and Manntester was blocked. Silva stood at the head of the Ardren Knights, who had established a defensive line—an ancient Ardren-style formation. According to those in the know, this specific array was a unique hybrid designed for both offense and defense.

From a vantage point overlooking the entire line, Vice-Commander Minerva approached Silva.

"Commander Silva. The time has finally come."

"Aye. My blood is finally pumping. Even this greatsword feels light today. It’s a glorious day."

"But are you sure about this? Sending only twenty percent of our forces to the forest... When I first heard the plan, I thought Lord Ryuu had lost his mind."

"I had my doubts at first, too. But there is no issue. We only need to look forward."

"If you say so, Commander, I won't press further, but..."

Silva’s mind flickered back to his sparring match with Ryuu.

(If push comes to shove, that man can handle anything. I simply have my own duty to fulfill.)

Just then, a group flying the banners of the Baron Manntester appeared in the distance.

"Tacky black armor and those hideous red war-banners. That’s the Manntester Knights, all right," Minerva noted. They were the polar opposite of the white-armored Ardren Knights.

"Finally, they're here."

Silva observed them coolly. (The numbers are even... no, since we didn't rotate as many troops to the forest, we actually have the advantage. And yet, their morale isn't flagging. Do they have some secret trick up their sleeves? Well, no matter.)

Silva slowly unsheathed the massive blade from his back. The sunlight glinted off the steel, casting a harsh glare over his subordinates.

"Men!"

His single word commanded the absolute attention of every knight.

"If they break through here, our lands will be trampled and everything we have will be stolen. To protect your families and your friends, become demons this day and mow down those invaders. Show them no mercy!"

" " " " "SIR!" " " " "

The start of the battle was sudden. There were no ritualistic insults traded between commanders. This was, quite literally, a fight to the death.

A massive man leading the black-armored pack drew a greatsword similar to Silva's and charged at full speed.

"Hahaha! I've come for your head, Silvaaaaa!"

"The Manntester Knight Commander. It's been a while."

(A reckless charge despite the numerical disadvantage. I see. Just as Lord Ryuu predicted, you knew about the Ardren formation.)

According to Ryuu, there were informants within the knights, so they had to assume their formations were compromised. However, Ryuu had suggested it would be "amusing" to set a trap using that very formation.

As a result, the enemy commander—believing he knew the formation's weakness—was charging straight in without hesitation. Exactly as Ryuu had foreseen.

Silva stepped out to the very front of the army.

"W-Wait, Commander Silva! You'll break the formation!"

"That's the point! This defensive array is designed to pivot into an assault at a moment's notice. We're moving out! Follow me!"

The Ardren forces lunged forward to meet the enemy at full tilt.

"But you don't have to be at the very front! It's dangerous!"

"You idiot! The men only run because their commander is leading the charge!"

True to his words, Silva's back looked larger than life to his men in that moment.

(That's right! We have Lord Silva with us!)

(We can't afford to fall behind!)

Morale... is something that can explode in an instant.

" " " " "UOOOOOOOHHHH!!!!" " " " "

"Hahahaha! SILVAAAAA!"

Matching the Manntester commander's roar, Silva swung his greatsword with everything he had.

"You stinking invaders! I'll send you back in pieces!"

—And then.

CLANG!!!

The two commanders' blades clashed, sending a high-pitched shockwave ringing through the air.

That sound marked the beginning of the war.

◇ ◇ ◇

Meanwhile, at the edge of the forest, a defensive line had been formed by a mix of Ardren Knights and elite adventurers hand-picked from the Guild.

Ryuu looked up at the cloudless sky, his brow furrowing slightly.

"........."

(It’s begun. I’m counting on you over there, Silva.)

Suzaku, the swordsman and leader of the B-Rank party 'White Wolf', approached him.

"Lord Ryuu. Is something the matter?"

"No, nothing."

"Do you really think this plan will work? Honestly?"

"It'll be a success, don't you worry. In the unlikely event they try to slip through the forest with a small, elite force, we'll just crush them with numbers. Otherwise, we're fine."

(According to Dylan's report, the enemy hasn't hired a single adventurer. There shouldn't be any wild cards.)

"Hearing you say that takes a weight off my shoulders," Suzaku admitted.

A few days prior, Ryuu had taken Fyodor and the members of White Wolf into the forest. They had spent a great deal of time meticulously laying traps along the route Manntester was expected to take. Those who had accompanied him remarked that the traps were like a spiderweb woven throughout the woods; they would certainly stall the Manntester army, wear them down, and with a bit of luck, perhaps even wipe them out.

Even if they made it through, the adventurers led by White Wolf were waiting.

Ryuu moved to a position where everyone could see him. White Wolf was directly in front, the adventurer contingent to his right, and the Ardren Knights to his left. He didn't need a long speech. He opened his mouth and said just one thing:

"I’m counting on you all today."

" " " " "YES, MY LORD!" " " " "

Deep within the forest, things were proceeding almost exactly as Ryuu had intended.

"Aaaagh!"

"Help me! Someone help me!"

"Why is there a pack of Orcs here?!"

"You moron, we probably stumbled right into their territory!"

"Look out! This way is dangerous too!"

"The trees are moving on their own—gaaaah!"

"Just when we think we’ve escaped, we hit a grove of Treants? How much bad luck can one army have?!"

The Manntester forces had committed a significant number of troops to the forest path. Their large numbers had become their undoing, making them easy prey for the monsters Ryuu had herded into their path.

Behind the screaming Manntester knights stood three men who looked like grizzled veterans. One of them muttered with a look of pure exasperation.

"Sigh... I told them not to go that way..."

"If they'd just listened to us, this wouldn't have happened," another chirped.

"Knights have too much pride. It’s a pain."

Before they knew it, the Manntester force had been cut to less than half its original size, and everyone was covered in wounds.

(Whoever set these traps has a seriously twisted personality... I can't wait to see their face.)

"Let's just go on ahead by ourselves. We got paid a fortune, after all."

"Agreed. We'll be here all day if we stick with these losers."

"Seconded."

The three men detached themselves from the main unit and vanished into the trees, heading toward the Ardren side.

Two hours later, at the forest's exit.

Suzaku sensed something shifting in the woods. "Lord Ryuu... something's coming."

"Yeah."

Everyone swallowed hard, their eyes glued to the forest edge. And then...

"Phew. Finally out of that damn forest. Whoever set those traps was a real piece of work."

"Oh my, look at the welcoming committee."

"This many? Easy."

Three men stepped boldly out of the forest. The Ardren knights let out sighs of relief seeing only three people emerge.

"What? Only three of 'em?"

"I worried for nothing."

"Who are they, anyway?"

"Probably just some lucky adventurers from the enemy side who made it through."

However, the Ardren adventurers froze the moment they saw the trio, cold sweat pouring down their faces.

" " " " "........." " " " "

The members of White Wolf shared that same expression of utter shock. Ryuu noticed immediately.

"Hey, Suzaku. Who are they?"

"T-Those guys..." Suzaku took a shaky breath. "That’s the A-Rank party, 'Blood Banquet'."

◇ ◇ ◇

Ryuu’s expression tightened ever so slightly.

"'Blood Banquet'? You mean the A-Rank party that represents the Empire? Even I've heard of them, and I don't know much about adventurers."

"Yes, that Blood Banquet. Why would big shots like them be here...?"

"So that was Baron Manntester’s play. He didn't hire a bunch of randoms because he put all his coin into them. I guess we both have a taste for 'dirty' tactics."

Baron Manntester hadn't hired a horde of mediocre adventurers; he had spent every cent he had to secure a single, legendary A-Rank party. He’d put all his eggs in one basket.

(I see. So that was his move.) Ryuu sighed. "Well, this just became a massive pain in the ass."

"I'm afraid so," Suzaku said. "All the strategies and formations we spent so much time on are worthless now."

They had planned for everything—from the entire Manntester army arriving to only a few stragglers making it through. They had crafted a strategy that was nearly flawless based on the expected enemy strength. But those plans were built around fighting regular knights and adventurers.

An A-Rank party changed everything.

In the Imperial Adventurer's Guild, there were plenty of B-Ranks, but only a handful of A-Ranks. Most adventurers, no matter how talented, hit a ceiling at B-Rank. If a B-Rank was a superhuman, an A-Rank was a monster—something that had transcended human limits.

Even Ryuu hadn't expected an A-Rank party to show up for a squabble between two lowly Barons. He had checked with the local Guild branch head, who had told him, "An A-Rank party would cause too much environmental damage; the Guild headquarters would likely step in to stop them."

But reality was different. Whatever the method, Blood Banquet had been bought by House Manntester.

"Suzaku. Excluding your party, do you think the other adventurers and the Ardren Knights can even be counted as combatants?"

"No. They might serve as a distraction to buy time, but if they try to fight, they'll be slaughtered instantly. If you don't want them to die for nothing, it’s best not to let them charge."

"Thought so... Dammit. This is a real mess..."

Despite his words, Ryuu's mind was racing at top speed, searching for a breakthrough. Seeing this, Suzaku smiled gently.

(Lord Ryuu doesn't want anyone to die. He really is too kind... Commander Silva told me that if the worst came to worst, I shouldn't hesitate to let Lord Ryuu fight. But before that, we should be the ones to step up.)

"White Wolf will take the lead, Lord Ryuu. We’ll leave the rest to you."

"Wait, 'the rest'? You mean..."

"Hehe. We've heard plenty from Commander Silva. Right, guys?"

The members of White Wolf nodded with grim determination. By saying "the rest," Suzaku was essentially conceding that White Wolf would lose. But that was only natural. An A-Rank adventurer and everyone else might as well be living in different worlds.

"We'll wear them down. Use that time to analyze their strength and find a way to snatch victory. We're counting on you."

"...I understand. Good luck. But I'm not giving you permission to die."

"Haha. That’ll depend on the enemy's mood, I guess."

(If they're showing this much resolve, then I have to make up my mind too. I wanted to avoid it if possible, but I don't have a choice. This isn't the time to be holding back—or hiding my power.)

The three members of Blood Banquet were casually chatting and warming up.

"Hm? Isn't that Baron Ardren over there?"

"Wow! That's a thousand gold coins just standing there!"

"We're set for life."

The five members of White Wolf pushed through their own lines and stood before Blood Banquet. Suzaku spoke first.

"It’s been a while, members of Blood Banquet."

"Huh? If it isn't White Wolf. Long time no see."

"Let me ask you one thing: do you have any intention of turning back?"

The leader of Blood Banquet made a 'money' gesture with his hand.

"Not a chance. We already got a fat stack of coin for this. I mean, if you could top that, we might consider it, but I don't think House Ardren has that kind of scratch. Kukuku."

"That confidence of yours... I'll break it soon enough."

"Ha! Give it your best shot!"

Suzaku immediately barked orders to his team. "I’ll handle that man. The rest of you split into pairs and hold off the other two. Buy as much time as you can!"

(We have to buy Lord Ryuu every second possible to analyze them.)

The four members of White Wolf moved into position and braced themselves. An arrow fired by one of the White Wolf members signaled the start of the battle.

The leader of Blood Banquet drew the longsword from his hip.

"I guess it's you and me, Suzaku."

"Sword against sword, magic against magic. That's the rule of thumb for duels, isn't it?"

"You know your stuff. Here I come!"

"I'll have you on the ground in no time!"

—The clash began.

Everyone watched, mesmerized by the deadly dance of the two leaders.

"What a beautiful fight..."

"Are those two even human?"

"Is this the power of high-rank adventurers...?"

To the eyes of a layman, it might have looked like an even match, but in reality, Suzaku was being completely suppressed, his body accumulating wounds. In contrast, the enemy was untouched.

(He's too fast. What kind of trick is he using?)

Suzaku noticed the enemy was shrouded in a faint layer of mana. "No way... you're wearing magic?!"

"Hahaha! You noticed! I've got wind magic wrapped around me right now!"

"I-I've never heard of such a high-level technique!"

"That's because it's a feat only a handful of A-Ranks can pull off!"

With that revelation, the enemy's assault intensified. Finally, Suzaku was struck by a deep slash.

"Gugh...!"

"There! Take this!"

The opening was exploited with a brutal kick to his chest.

"GYAH!"

He was sent flying backward, coughing up blood. Suzaku collapsed to the ground and didn't move.

(I can't... move. I've lost too much blood...)

The leader of Blood Banquet twirled his sword. "Well, out of professional courtesy, I'll spare your life."

(If it gets out that I killed White Wolf in a war, those old fogeys at the Guild will hunt me down for real. I’d rather avoid that.)

The Ardren adventurers looked down in despair, and the knights lamented their fate.

"I-It can't be..."

"Even White Wolf was beaten that easily...?"

"They're monsters!"

"If they're that strong, no amount of us will be enough to stop them... What are we supposed to do...?"

Suzaku, still pinned to the ground, looked around. The other four members of his party were in the same state—incapacitated.

(Damn... is this it? Forgive me, Lord Ryuu... we couldn't even scratch them.)

Suddenly, Ryuu was standing right beside him.

"L-Lord Ryuu?!"

"You did well, Suzaku. Thanks to you, I've got a good handle on their strength. Leave the rest to me."

Ryuu drew his beloved blade—'Kurikara'—from its sheath.

"You're going to fight yourself, my Lord?! And... that sword..."

(If I remember correctly, that’s a single-edged blade from the Eastern island nations called a 'katana'.)

The knights and adventurers began to clamor.

"Lord Ryuu! We'll fight, please step back!"

"That's right! We'll be your shield, so please escape while you can!"

"If we all throw our lives away, we can at least buy you some time—"

"Everyone, shut up for a second."

His quiet words resonated naturally through the entire army. "You think I'd allow you to throw your lives away like that?"

But the knights wouldn't back down. "B-But!"

"Just stay back and watch. Why do you think I came to the forest side in the first place?"

"That's..."

Ryuu turned his gaze toward the members of Blood Banquet, who were wearing predatory grins as if their prize had just delivered itself.

"I came here to personally bury these arrogant fools."

—He took a powerful step forward.

◇ ◇ ◇

Ryuu finally faced off against Blood Banquet.

(A swordsman, a mage, and a martial artist. Quite a balanced trio. The swordsman and martial artist are at full health, not a scratch on them. The mage still has ninety percent of his mana. I thought White Wolf might have a chance, but I guess I was asking too much. I underestimated A-Ranks.)

"Guess holding a sword means you aren't planning on surrendering quietly," the leader sneered.

"Thanks for coming to us, Mr. Bounty Head. Saves us a walk," the mage added.

Ryuu ignored the bait. "I figured numbers wouldn't work on you lot, so I decided to handle this myself."

"Ho? So the house head is gonna fight?"

"Yeah."

"Oi, oi..." The three of them looked dumbfounded. "Didn't you see the fight just now? We're three A-Ranks. Baron Manntester said you're a noble who can't even use magic. You're out of your league, kid. Way out."

"Exactly. The only people who can take us on alone are a handful of geniuses—S-Rank adventurers or Imperial Imperial Mages. Don't you nobles even know that much?"

"I'll give you points for guts. Now give up."

While the Ardren troops watched with bated breath, Ryuu gave his answer.

"Well, I figured one of me would be plenty for three A-Ranks."

The members of Blood Banquet went silent. " " "........." " "

—And then.

"Then I'll kill you right now! YOU LITTLE BRAT!"

The leader shrouded himself in wind and lunged. He closed the distance at a speed that left sound behind, his sword coming down in a lethal arc. No one present could even react.

CLANG!!!!!

Well... no one except Ryuu.

"...Huh?" The leader's eyes widened. (He blocked my strike?!)

The impact was so great that the ground beneath Ryuu's feet cracked.

"A bit faster than I expected," Ryuu noted. "But..."

"W-Wait, guhaaa!"

Ryuu delivered a brutal kick to the leader’s stomach, sending him tumbling back just as Suzaku had been.

(What kind of power is this? I can't breathe...) The leader rolled along the ground until he ended up back where he started. The other two were gawking.

"The leader closed the distance, then got bounced back like he hit a wall? What just happened...?"

"I didn't see anything. Impossible."

The leader scrambled to his feet. "Gah... cough. He's not just some kid... Go all out, guys!"

The other two realized the gravity of the situation instantly. "Understood."

Blood Banquet’s coordinated assault began. The swordsman and martial artist attacked from the flanks while the mage launched fire spells from the front.

(If I dodge right, it's the sword. Left, it's the fist. Front is the fire. If I jump, I'm playing right into their hands. I bet plenty of people have died to this combo. ...Interesting.)

Ryuu backed off skillfully, ensuring they didn't get behind him, while parrying the relentless flurry from the swordsman and martial artist. He blocked, he dodged, he deflected with his blade.

"Damn, we can't hit him! What kind of kinetic vision does he have...?"

"Why can he parry my punches? It makes no sense!"

While they struggled, a massive blast of fire closed in from the front. Just before impact, the two melee fighters tried to backstep and create distance, but—

"I don't think so."

"?!?!?!"

Ryuu grabbed the martial artist by the face and forcibly used him as a shield.

"GYAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!"

Having taken an A-Rank mage's fire magic point-blank, the martial artist was charred black and instantly knocked out. Ryuu tossed the scorched body aside like trash.

"...Two left."

The Ardren troops were completely spellbound by the ferocity of the battle.

"The Blood Banquet guys... they're like completely different people compared to before."

"And Lord Ryuu is taking them on alone... what is he...?"

"What am I even looking at...?"

With one comrade down, the mage finally grasped the reality of their situation.

(This tactic has killed countless experts... and yet he hasn't taken a single scratch. If I don't do something... I'm the one who's going to die!)

Yes. With Ryuu’s entry, Blood Banquet had gone from the hunters to the hunted. If House Manntester's greatest strength was Blood Banquet, then House Ardren's greatest strength was Ryuu—not a mercenary, but the Baron himself.

The mage desperately racked his brain and decided to try psychological warfare.

"Hey, kid. I heard you have a sister, right? A real beauty, too."

"Maybe."

"I bet the Manntester army is storming your mansion right now. Things must be getting pretty ugly... The knights don't see many women, so they’re probably starving for some fun!"

"............"

That provocation crossed the line. The atmosphere on the battlefield shifted violently. The mage flinched, instinctively taking a step back under Ryuu's piercing gaze.

"Ugh..."

The leader screamed internally. (You idiot! Don't provoke him!)

"I'll show you," Ryuu said, his voice cold. "I'll show you what real magic looks like."

"Real... magic? Wait, why did the sky go dark all of a sudden...?"

The once-clear blue sky was suddenly choked with clouds, turning pitch black. Ryuu's mana began to surge. It was so dense that it became visible to the naked eye.

(Wait... I thought he couldn't use magic...)

(That bastard Manntester lied to us! This kid has more mana than any mage I've ever seen! Dammit!)

Ryuu pointed his index finger toward the sky, then slowly brought it down.

"<Indra>."

" ...Huh?"

—In an instant.

BOOM!!!!!!!!

Lightning fell from the heavens with a thunderous roar, vaporizing the mage where he stood. All that remained was a massive crater and a pile of ash.

◇ ◇ ◇

The sudden lightning strike left the battlefield dominated by purple sparks. It was a different world from just moments ago. Cold sweat trickled down the leader's cheek.

"You... what the hell are you?"

"I'm exactly who you think I am."

"Liar. Fighting you feels like fighting a monster in human skin. Especially that aura... you're just like a 'Dragon' I saw from a distance once."

"Well, my name does mean Dragon, after all."

"I guess the saying about hidden talents is true. I never would have taken this job if I knew a monster like you was hiding in the sticks... Seriously, this is the worst."

"What a coincidence. I’m in a pretty foul mood myself."

The leader took a breath and asked one final question. "...Why haven't you made a name for yourself?"

"What do you mean?"

"I’m asking why someone with that much power is hiding away instead of making a name for himself! You could ditch the Baronry and become an adventurer or a soldier! You know you'd be a hero the whole continent would fight over!"

"Don't be stupid. I have a family I love, subordinates I'm responsible for, and people to protect. ...Besides, until recently, I couldn't use magic this powerful. I don't like standing out, and I hate trouble. And... well, there are other reasons."

"Being a noble sounds like a drag. I always thought I was lucky to be a commoner... but seeing your power, I'm starting to get jealous of the nobility." (Though if I were a noble, I’d probably just be another fat, useless slob like our employer.)

The leader sighed deeply and shrouded himself in wind magic with everything he had. "No point in talking anymore. I'm betting everything on this next strike."

"Ho? You're not running? Unexpected for a piece of trash like you."

"I can't leave my comrades' souls behind and run away. Even a fool like me has a bit of pride, you know?"

"...I see."

Ryuu's mana surged even higher. Even though he wasn't using a spell yet, 'Black Lightning' crackled across the field. The ground split, and the air trembled. The battlefield itself seemed to be screaming.

(How much mana is this monster hiding...?)

The pressure began to affect the Ardren troops watching from afar.

"Lord Ryuu's mana is...!"

"Ugh, I... I can't breathe..."

"Dammit, my weapon is conducting the static, I can't hold it..."

The men could barely remain standing. Ryuu pointed the tip of his katana at the leader.

"In honor of your guts, I'll show you a special magic as a parting gift."

"Special... magic?" (You mean the lightning strike from before wasn't special to him?!)

Violent black lightning enveloped Ryuu's entire body.

—And then.

"<Black Armor—Raijin Takemikazuchi>."

The god of thunder from the legends of the Eastern islands had descended upon this world.

".................."

Even the enemy leader was captivated by the mystical yet destructive sight.

(You can't just call this magic a work of 'genius' and be done with it. The mana pool is insane, but what's really crazy is the control needed to stabilize it. He's just a kid... what kind of hell has he walked through?)

With every step Ryuu took, the earth shook. With every breath, the atmosphere shuddered. Lightning poured from the dark clouds, and the forest wailed.

"Here I come, Blood Banquet. Brace yourself."

"Ha! As if it'll matter, you goddamn monster!"

The Spirit of the Wind against the God of Thunder. The first to move was... the former.

"UOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

In his final moment, the leader was smiling.

—That day, Blood Banquet vanished from the world.

When the battle concluded, the storm clouds vanished as if they had never been, and the sun peaked out once more. Ryuu deactivated his magic and returned to his usual self.

With a light step, he turned back to the Ardren troops who were still frozen, unable to process what they had seen.

"Everything that happened during this battle is to remain strictly confidential. ...Understood?"

Every single one of them nodded frantically. They had no choice. It was that kind of battle. A battle of miracles.

By the way, the members of White Wolf had already been treated and had witnessed the latter half of Ryuu's fight.

Watching Ryuu walk back toward them with a yawn, Suzaku whispered to himself. "Lord Ryuu... who are you, really...?"

In the end, the official story was that an A-Rank party had appeared in the forest, but everyone had worked together to somehow repel them.

As the dazed forest-side Ardren army began their journey home, over on the highway side...

"Gugh... S-Silva... you bastard...!!"

Silva's greatsword was buried deep in the Manntester Knight Commander's chest.

"Just die already. We have work to do after this."

Silva had pierced the man's heart. The enemy commander breathed his last, and the Ardren army let out a victory cry.

The sky cleared there as well, the sunlight illuminating the white Ardren armor beautifully. Vice-Commander Minerva approached. Judging by the state of her armor, she had survived her own brush with death.

"We did it, Commander Silva."

"Aye. But the job isn't over yet. Stay with me until the end."

"Of course. We'll follow you anywhere. ...By the way, was the forest side okay? There were an awful lot of lightning strikes coming from that direction."

"I've told you many times, it's fine. That man was over there."

"But Lord Ryuu is only fourteen, right?"

"Minerva, listen well... Never judge a person by their age or appearance. 'The true article wears the skin of a commoner.' Just like the Imperial Mages hidden throughout the continent."

"...!!" The Vice-Commander was overwhelmed by Silva's sudden intensity.

"Well, I had to learn that lesson the hard way myself. Kukuku." Silva mounted his horse and raised his voice. "Wipe out every last straggler! We're moving on to seize Baron Manntester's mansion immediately!"

" " " " "SIR!" " " " "

By the time the Manntester mansion was secured, the sun had already set.

Ryuu returned to his own estate, sent the adventurers back to the Guild, and left twenty percent of the Ardren Knights to guard the main house.

Late that night, his sister Rena was fast asleep in their mother Airisu's room. Ryuu stood outside the door, leaning against it while reviewing reports.

"........." (Everything went according to plan. Silva did well.)

Suddenly, a man dressed in black appeared out of nowhere.

"Lord Ryuu. Good work today."

"You too, Dylan."

"Oh, please. I was just waiting in a tree. Though, it’s been a while since I saw you fight. You seem to have gotten even more powerful."

"Well, I'm growing too. I am only fourteen."

"True enough. It’s a terrifying thought. One day, you might even surpass the Dragons themselves and become the strongest being in existence."

"I hope so. Also, Dylan, Silva will be back soon with Baron Manntester's head. Until then, stay sharp. We're keeping the guard tight."

"Roger that."

At the same time, outside the mansion...

"Hey."

"Yeah? What is it?"

"Who do you think Lord Ryuu really is?"

"Shh! We're forbidden from talking about that."

"Haha, sorry, sorry."

The two soldiers looked up at the starry sky.

"But Lord Ryuu was incredible today... really incredible..."

"House Ardren is safe now. I'm glad I joined the knights."

"Yeah. I feel the same. We’ve got to keep training."

◇ ◇ ◇

Dylan hoisted a blood-soaked cloth bag into the air.

"Uh, Lord Ryuu? What should we do with Baron Manntester’s head? Since we went to all the trouble, do you want to mount it on the gate as a warning?"

"Cut that out. What if my sister sees it?"

"Then what are we supposed to do with it?"

"It’s filth. Just toss it somewhere appropriate."

"Calling a nobleman's head 'filth' is a bit much..."

Despite the irregular intervention of the Blood Banquet, the Ardren forces had secured a decisive victory. Given that the public had assumed Baron Manntester’s triumph was a foregone conclusion, the news sent shockwaves through the Empire.

Furthermore, every individual who had conspired to start the war—including those of the Baron's bloodline—had been cut down by Silva’s hand.

A thorough investigation of the Baron Manntester estate was currently underway. Valuables and books were being transported to the Ardren manor, while weapons and armor were being hauled into the knights' armory. As for the manor and the land themselves, Ryuu planned to sell them off to the Commerce Guild.

However, the most pressing issue was...

"What to do with these slaves."

"Indeed," Sebas agreed.

In the carriage before them sat the slaves previously owned by the House of Baron Manntester.

"..."

They were all trembling, casting anxious glances at Ryuu and Sebas.

"From the looks of it, they weren't treated very well. Poor things," Sebas noted dryly.

"Yeah. But taking them all into our house is too big of a risk."

"We cannot guarantee that none of them are Baron Manntester’s plants, after all."

"Exactly. That said, my conscience would prick me if I just sold them back to a slave trader."

Sebas tilted his head. "So you actually had a conscience, Lord Ryuu? How nobel."

"Shut it."

As the two deliberated, a window in the manor slid open.

"My, my. Are you agonizing over the fate of those slaves, perhaps?"

"Oh, Mother."

"It is as Lady Airisu says..."

Their mother rested a hand against her cheek. "Hmm... First, you should go to the Commerce Guild to look into their origins. Sell the criminal slaves back to the traders, and as for the common slaves, we’ll take them in after a proper interview. They likely have their own internal community; if you question each one in detail, you should be able to weed out the suspicious ones."

"I see. The Commerce Guild, huh? Slave traders do fall under their jurisdiction."

"Yes. If the Baron himself goes in person, I’m sure they’ll provide the necessary information immediately."

"Got it. I’ll head over to the local branch to give them my thanks for their 'cooperation' during the war while I'm at it."

And I need to talk to them about buying that Elixir.

Ryuu hadn't told his mother yet that he planned to spend the war funds on an Elixir. If he explained it to her, she would undoubtedly explode: 'Don't spend money on such useless things! Use it for the House and the territory! I absolutely won't allow it! If you buy it without permission, I'll return it, so you'd better be prepared!'

Leaving the slaves in Sebas's care for the moment, Ryuu headed for the guild... but not before making a stop in the forest.

Deep within the woods.

"Sorry I’m late."

"I managed to get a little nap in, so it’s all good, Ryuu-kun."

An unassuming middle-aged man was perched on a branch of a massive tree. This was Fyodor, one of Ryuu’s most trusted allies.

"Let’s get right to it. What happened to the Baron Manntester forces that tried to push through the forest?"

"Wiped 'em out to the last man. You really have a talent for making the most twisted traps, Ryuu-kun. Ahaha!"

"The monsters in this forest are just aggressive, that’s all."

"Haha! That too. They were still pretty pissed off."

The village chief hopped down from the branch and handed Ryuu a map.

"Check it out for yourself just to be safe. I marked the spots."

"Appreciate it. I’m always in your debt, Fyodor."

"Don't mention it. We go way back. I’m counting on you from here on out, too."

"Likewise."

"Man, though... that lightning yesterday was something else. A real bolt from the blue. Did you do that, Ryuu-kun?"

"Something like that... Though it wasn't exactly my first choice."

"Hmm. You’re as over-the-top as ever."

"So I've been told."

As Fyodor turned to leave, he looked back once. "Oh, by the way, thanks for fixing the bridge over the canyon. The villagers are thrilled."

"Thank my mother for that; she’s the one who rounded up all the craftsmen. Besides, I'm the one who broke it in the first place."

"True! Ahahaha!"

After parting with the chief, Ryuu ran through the forest with the map in hand. At each marked location, piles of black armor lay discarded, surrounded by scattered human bones.

Hmm. The numbers are slightly lower than reported, but the rest were probably dragged off or swallowed whole by the monsters.

"Alright. Confirmation complete. Time to head to the Commerce Guild."

Upon arriving at the guild, he first offered his verbal thanks for the war effort, as their interactions thus far had been limited to paperwork. Next, he requested the disclosure of the background information for the former Baron Manntester slaves... With this, he could rest easy.

Finally, he consulted them about purchasing an Elixir. Through the guild, he successfully placed an order with a renowned apothecary residing in the capital. Since the post-war settlements hadn't been finalized yet, payment was deferred, but Ryuu found himself impressed by the guild’s sheer efficiency.

However, one annoying problem arose.

"I have to go pick it up myself? You mean I have to travel all the way to the capital just for that?"

"Yes... Well, he's a rather... difficult individual..."

"Is he the type who's going to grill me about the patient's symptoms and history?"

"Yes. Most likely..."

Apothecaries and alchemists were notorious for being eccentrics, but Ryuu hadn't expected to run into one this time. Or rather, he had assumed that someone skilled enough to brew an Elixir would be a more stoic, professional figure. He hadn't anticipated someone quite this prickly.

Essentially, he’d been stuck with a weirdo who exceeded his imagination.

"Sigh... It’s not like I have a lot of free time. Especially with the post-war cleanup."

"I-I am terribly sorry..."

"You don't need to apologize. Don't worry about it. Well, I’ve never been to the capital, so I suppose I can look at it as a good experience."

"I am glad to hear you say so."

"Give me the pickup date and location."

"Certainly. The date is..."

Ryuu noted down the receptionist’s explanation and left the guild.

Everything is going relatively smoothly so far. I just hope things keep progressing this easily...

With that thought, he finally began his journey home.

Astoria Imperial Capital, Imperial Castle. Within the Audience Chamber.

"The House of Ardren secured a total victory... It seems things went exactly as Your Majesty predicted, Empress Iris."

"Heh heh heh. So Ryuu Ardren really is the 'real deal'."

"The real deal, Your Majesty?"

"If he took up the spear himself, he is a paragon of martial might. If he employed strategy to lure his enemies into traps, he is a genius of intellect. Either way, he is a man of exceptional caliber."

"I see. However, if both happen to be true..."

The Empress's expression turned grave.

"That seems unlikely. But on the off chance that it is true, I shall make him mine. All for the sake of fulfilling my long-cherished wish of—"

"One can never have too many excellent pawns, after all."

First: The Wise Emperor Iris, through her peerless cunning, constantly toys with other nations in the realm of diplomacy.

Second: The Wise Emperor Iris is well-versed in numerous fields of study, a giant of intellect who leaves even researchers in awe.

Third: The Wise Emperor Iris is a leader of such charisma that she holds the Empire’s greatest monsters in the palm of her hand.

This was the international evaluation of the Empress. Ryuu may have caught the eye of a very dangerous individual.

"By the way, what shall we do regarding the surveillance of the Ardren territory? We could withdraw our agents if you wish."

"Continue, of course. In fact, increase the number of spies."

"Understood. I shall dispatch them at once."

Behind a pillar in the Audience Chamber, a lock of pink hair swayed.

To think Mother would acknowledge his strength to such a degree... This Baron Ardren must be truly incredible.

"Wait, hold on. I just realized... if he’s fourteen, that makes him the same age as me."

I'm certain that 'other' person was around that age, too. Could there really be two such incredible young men in some backwater noble territory? Wait... what if that person IS Baron Ardren?! If that's the case, everything fits together! I have to investigate this right away!

The First Princess dashed back toward her room, her footsteps echoing tap-tap-tap down the hall.

"..."

"Did something happen, Empress Iris?"

"No, it was nothing."

At that same moment, somewhere else in the world, this conversation was taking place.

"The 'King’s Vessel' has finally appeared."

"Where has it been hiding all this time?"

"A vessel this well-developed... it's been a thousand... no, ten thousand years."

"The previous one died before the King could awaken. I wonder how it will fare this time."

"Coincidentally, its attribute is the same as our King’s."

The post-war processing proceeded smoothly, and a long-awaited peace finally returned to the House of Ardren.

On this day, as usual, Ryuu had been spending his morning teaching Rena magic. The grimoire they were looking at was one Ryuu had edited himself; while it had its quirks, it was extremely easy to understand.

The page Rena currently had open listed several basic spells.

"I’m curious about this one."

"『Torch』, huh? It’s a handy spell, so you should definitely learn it. See, the activation requirements are written right here."

『Torch』... gather mana at the tip of your index finger and whisper 'Torch' in your mind.

"But Ryuu-niisama, when I watched the knights' training before, they all chanted at the beginning?"

"Good catch. Actually, the grimoire you're reading right now is for advanced users."

"Advanced...? Do advanced users use magic without chanting?"

"Exactly. In fact, A-rank adventurers handle magic chantlessly all the time."

Rena tilted her head.

Why am I using an advanced grimoire? I'm still a beginner.

"I can tell you're skeptical, so let me explain further." Ryuu cleared his throat. "Most of the magic books currently circulating in the Empire are written for 'beginners with little mana.' In other words, they’re highly inefficient for high-level users with large reserves. You have a massive amount of mana to begin with, Rena, and you already have a solid grasp of the basics. Plus, since you've watched the knights train so often, you probably have a decent mental image of how magic works, right?"

"Yes."

"Just between us, being able to form a mental image of magic after only seeing it a few times means you have an outstanding natural talent."

"I... I do?"

"You can see where I'm going with this, can't you?"

"That this advanced grimoire is actually the best fit for me."

"Exactly. No doubt about it. If there's one concern, it's that I might be a poor teacher."

"Ryuu-niisama, you're not a poor teacher at all! You're the best teacher ever!!"

"You're too kind, Rena. Thank you."

"Hmph..."

I wasn't just being nice!

"Still... I can't help but think a mid-level grimoire might have been okay..."

"No. You're going to be a great mage someday, Rena, so you should start with the advanced stuff. If you learn from beginner or intermediate books, you might pick up bad habits."

"But..."

Onii-sama is actually quite the Spartan. It’s kind of cute.

"Don't worry, I'll be here to guide you every step of the way. I might not look it, but I’m a bit of a bookworm—I've scoured hundreds of magic tomes. I’ve even gone through every book in our own archives."

"Every step of the way...? Truly?"

"Truly. I swear it on the name of Ardren."

"Then I'll learn from this book!!"

An hour into their study session.

Gather mana at the tip of my finger... 『Torch』.

A small, bright flame flickered into existence at the tip of Rena’s index finger.

"I did it! I actually did it!"

"Good, well done. It was perfect. As expected of my sister. You'll surely be counted among the Imperial Mages one day. Keep it up."

"Oh, stop! You're praising me too much! ...But I'm happy!"

After their lesson, the two enjoyed tea together.

"Your best magic is lightning attribute, isn't it, Onii-sama?"

"Yeah. You're well-informed."

"I think I read in a textbook during my lessons that lightning is a top-tier difficulty attribute and very hard to control. Why did you decide to learn it?"

"I just thought it looked cool."

"What...?"

Ryuu-niisama really is just a boy at heart. I love that.

◇ ◇ ◇

Now that the post-war cleanup had settled and the Elixir purchase was underway, there was no immediate rush for anything. However, since he wouldn't be able to do anything while traveling to the capital, Ryuu decided to go out on his mother's behalf. Specifically...

"Hey, Mother. Is there anything I can help with?"

"Ah, in that case, could you oversee the project to clear the forest on the border between the Ardren and Baron Manntester territories? I want to build a large-scale plantation there. Since, well, I can't exactly go outside myself."

"Got it. Leave it to me."

Clearing the forest was easier said than done, as dangerous monsters inhabited the woods. However, that was mostly true for the heart of the forest; the outskirts were largely safe zones.

Having investigated the forest thoroughly for the recent military operation, Ryuu had discovered a region perfectly suited for farming.

"Indeed. The terrain is flat, just as reported. The temperature, soil quality, and water resources are all impeccable. Plus, it's a manageable distance from the town of Ardren. Once this place starts functioning as a farm, we’ll become an agricultural powerhouse rivaling the neighboring House of Grace."

"I don't know... that seems like a pretty tall order..."

Ryuu’s companion for this outing was Suzaku, the leader of the White Wolves. He had been brought along to cull the local monster population—a legitimate job, of course.

The Ardren territory bordered the lands of Margrave Grace, a high-ranking noble. The Grace territory boasted vast farmlands and an overwhelming annual harvest. Since they provided a massive share of the Empire’s produce, they were known as the 'Imperial Granary.' Compared to Grace, Ardren was little more than a speck of dust.

And yet, for some reason, Ryuu was trying to compete with them. It was only natural that Suzaku would find it hard to believe.

"Every great achievement begins with a single small step, Lord Ryuu."

"Mmm. For once, Suzaku, you’ve said something quite profound."

"What do you mean 'for once'?! Hey...!"

"Anyway, I'm counting on you to cull the monsters across this vast plot of land, Suzaku."

"Let's give it our best together, Lord Ryuu!"

"I have other things to do, so I can't help you."

"What?! Oh, come on..."

"Look, the main force has arrived."

Ryuu pointed toward a group of about a hundred Ardren knights carrying axes. Silva, who was at the front, ran toward them.

"Lord Ryuu. As per your instructions, I have equipped the entire hundred-man battalion with axes."

"Good work. I'll be borrowing them for a while. You may return to your other duties, Silva."

"Sir!"

With a salute, Silva disappeared back toward town.

"Alright, I'll be taking command of the Lumberjack Battalion. Suzaku, make sure no monsters get near us. Cull them as you see fit."

"Protecting a hundred people at once? That's asking the impossible..."

"Relax. These guys are elites. In the worst-case scenario, they can take down a monster with their axes. Right, men?"

"SIR!"

The reclamation began immediately. The trees weren't overly dense here, so with a hundred men swinging axes, the work would likely be finished in about three days.

"Alright! Process the felled trees into timber, and those who can use fire magic, burn out the stumps as we go!"

Because he made them do literal woodcutter labor, this battalion would later be given the somewhat dishonorable title of the 'Lumberjack Battalion,' but that is a story for another time.

After three days of swinging axes from dawn till dusk...

"Phew... pant, pant..."

The reclamation was finally complete. The area was transformed beyond recognition; a plot of land large enough to build an entire town had been cleared.

"Good work, everyone."

"Don't mention it! It was a great workout! The best!"

"Is that so? Well, as expected of Ardren knights. You're all needlessly sturdy."

"Don't start with the Ardren-style insults now..." Suzaku grumbled. He had hunted over a hundred monsters in those three days.

"As you all know, this place is slated to become a large-scale plantation. Normally, we’d have to plow the fields, build irrigation channels and fences, and set up storage sheds and rest areas. But our job ends here. Mother's subordinates will take over from now on. Let me say it once more: Thank you for your hard work. I truly appreciate it."

Ryuu lowered his head.

"SIR!"

"Uh, Lord Ryuu? Isn't it improper for a nobleman to bow his head so easily?"

"Ardren is different. We’re just backwater frontier nobles from a podunk territory."

"That's not even a reason!"

"More importantly, thanks to you too, Suzaku. I pushed you a bit hard."

"Oh, please. I'm the top of B-rank, you know. This was a breeze."

"Even though you got absolutely wrecked during the Blood Banquet?"

"Hey! Don't bring that up!"

In a few months' time, Ardren’s proud plantation would be completed here. Having absorbed the Baron Manntester territory, their tax revenue had doubled... no, considering Baron Manntester's economic prosperity, it was nearly triple what it used to be.

In exchange, as the head of the house, Ryuu would have to throw himself into management, developing the territory and enriching the lives of his people.

◇ ◇ ◇

A few days later, the day for Ryuu to depart for the capital finally arrived.

Originally, Ryuu had planned to go alone. It would be less conspicuous, and he could save both time and money. However, when Silva heard this, he stood his ground.

"I absolutely cannot allow you to travel alone, Lord Ryuu. Not from a common-sense perspective, nor for the sake of our reputation."

In the end, it was decided that he would take a single guard. Ryuu was currently in the courtyard with his travel pack, waiting for his escort.

"..."

For this trip, he was bringing an Item Bag—a high-end leather pouch enchanted with space-expansion magic. Incidentally, it was a magic tool that had been acquired by the previous head of the house. Given that it was a possession of that man, it felt slightly cursed, but Ryuu believed in using every tool at his disposal.

Silva soon arrived, leading a female knight.

"My apologies for the delay."

"Don't worry about it."

The female knight performed a graceful bow. "I am Stingray. I shall be serving as your guard for this journey, Lord Ryuu. It is an honor to make your acquaintance."

"I’m Ryuu Ardren. Your father is always a great help to me. I look forward to working with you."

She was Silva’s only daughter. Until recently, she had been traveling across the Empire as part of her knightly training, but she had returned to Ardren upon hearing news of the war to lend her strength. Afterward, she had officially joined the Ardren Knights at Silva's recommendation, and because of her extensive travel experience, she had been chosen as Ryuu’s guard.

Today was their first meeting.

Hmph. So this is the rumored new Baron. He’s got a nice face, but otherwise, he looks pretty average.
