[ENG] I've been reincarnated in another world, so I want to see the real deal—a "Kukkoro" moment! Volume 1 Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The "Kukkoro" Hardcore Fan and the Princess Knight of Justice

Several months had passed since the entrance exams.

I was currently in the presence of my entire family as I opened the letter that had arrived from the military academy. The faces surrounding me were all alight with smiles.

"That’s amazing, Onii-sama! You’re in S-Class!"

"Indeed. As expected of my pride and joy. Well done, son."

"It’s wonderful, Jeralt. All that hard work since you were little has truly paid off."

"Thank you, Father, Mother, Alice."

The letter contained my notice of acceptance and information regarding the S-Class private dormitory. At the academy, students were divided into five ranks based on ability: S, A, B, C, and D. The treatment one received varied wildly depending on their class. The quality of the facilities and, of course, the dorm rooms were on entirely different levels. S-Class students received large private rooms; A-Class got standard private rooms; and everyone else had to make do with doubles.

Nobles were apparently granted private rooms regardless of rank due to the risk of assassination, but I wanted to make the most of my school life, so securing a spot in S-Class was a relief.

Though, really, my goal is to be the top student overall.

"I’ve already placed the order for your uniform. It should arrive shortly," Father said.

"Thank you, Father."

"I can't wait to see you in your uniform, Onii-sama!"

"Haha, once it arrives. Besides, Alice, you’ll be enrolling yourself in five years."

"I’m going to get into S-Class just like you, Brother!" Alice declared, pumping a small, determined fist in front of her chest, her eyes sparkling.

She had started training with the sword after watching me practice, insisting she wanted to try it too. She was already showing flashes of brilliance. Her studies were going perfectly well, too; if she kept this up, she’d be a shoo-in for S-Class.

"I have no doubt you'll make it, Alice."

"Yes!"

"Haha, you two really do get along. At any rate, Jeralt, you did well on the exams. As far as the House of Drake is concerned, as long as you are in S-Class, there is no issue. Good work."

"Yes, Father."

While my results were primarily driven by my desire to witness the peak of Kukkoro beauty, it had ultimately served the interests of the Drake family, so it was a win-win. I gave my father a deep, respectful bow.

I spent the following days training and packing, until finally, the day of the move arrived. I stood before the carriage just as the sun was beginning to peek over the horizon.

"Stay healthy, Jeralt... And do your best," Mother said.

"I will, Mother. I shall achieve grades worthy of the eldest son of the House of Drake."

"Onii-sama...! I’ll work hard so that by the time you come home, you’ll be proud to call me your sister...!"

"What are you saying? I’m already proud to call you my sister, Alice."

I patted her head gently. She beamed at me, her ponytail swishing back and forth. She really was the cutest, most honest, most precious little sister in the world.

After finishing my goodbyes with Mother and Alice, I turned to the head of the house. Father approached me, holding a long, slender bag.

"This is a gift to celebrate your enrollment. Accept it."

"A gift, Father?"

I took the bag and opened it to check the contents. Inside lay a masterpiece of a sword, its blade gleaming with a beautiful luster that screamed of its lethal sharpness. It was the kind of weapon one rarely laid eyes upon.

"Is it truly alright for me to have such a magnificent sword?"

"Yes. I prepared the finest materials and had the kingdom’s greatest blacksmith forge it specifically for you. Use it well."

"The blade is stunning... and the weight and length are perfect for me."

"Then I am satisfied. You may customize the hilt to your liking."

"Understood. Thank you very much, Father. I’m truly honored."

The unexpected gift filled me with joy. I appreciated the sentiment, but more importantly, this sword would surely help me reach new heights. Both as a swordsman and as a man who desired to witness Kukkoro.

"Do your best, Jeralt."

"Yes. I shall devote myself to my studies so that I may one day rule this land as the future Marquis Drake."

Father nodded, looking pleased. It was time to leave. I climbed into the carriage, cradling the precious sword in my arms.

"I’m off. Father, Mother, Alice!"

I kept waving from the carriage window until their figures disappeared from sight. For the sake of Kukkoro, and for the sake of my family, I would keep moving forward. I swore that oath in my heart.

After several days of travel, I found myself unsheathing the sword my father gave me, admiring it in the swaying carriage. He didn't just order something high-end; he had it forged from scratch just for me. I had to treasure this.

"Lord Jeralt, we have arrived."

"I see. Good work."

A voice called out from outside as the carriage came to a halt. I answered, opened the door, and stepped down. Standing majestically before me was the Albar Kingdom National Military Academy. It was my second time seeing it, but it was still staggeringly huge.

"Hey! Jera-alt!"

"Hm?"

Hearing a familiar voice, I turned to see Lawrence waving as he walked toward me. Meeting him this quickly was a lucky break.

"Long time no see. You doing okay?" I asked.

"Of course. And I kept my promise—I passed."

Lawrence showed me a slip of paper. It had 'S-Class' printed clearly on it. He seemed to have remembered me telling him to make sure he got into S-Class during the written exam.

"Glad to hear it. I'm in S-Class as well."

"I figured. I don't know the specifics of your written scores, but after seeing that display of strength in the practical, I would've been shocked if you weren't S-Class."

"Hmph. Thanks. Well, shall we go check the rankings?"

"Yeah. The cafeteria meal is on the line, after all. I probably lost the practical, but I’m hoping to beat you in the written and overall totals."

We started walking together. Apparently, the results had already been posted, as a crowd had gathered in front of the bulletin board set up in the schoolyard. Everyone likely knew their assigned class already, but they were gathered out of curiosity to see their standing within the grade and who their peers were. Human nature makes you curious about rankings, after all.

"There are so many people, I can't see a thing," Lawrence complained.

"It is what it is. It looks like people are clearing out once they finish checking, so just waiting in line is the fastest way."

"Haha, that doesn’t sound like something the 'Violent Young Lord' would say."

"Shut it. You know the truth of that matter better than anyone."

Seriously, this guy was so lighthearted it was hard to believe he was a noble. His vibe was exactly like someone from my previous life. Even so, I didn't feel like he was looking down on me or mocking me; he just knew how to manage social distance perfectly.

"Oh, I can see it now. Let's start with the practical exam."

"Sure, whichever."

It was our turn to stand before the board. The entrance exam was weighted toward academics, with 500 points for the written portion and 300 for the practical. I wanted to question why a 'military academy' prioritized books over blades, but those were the rules, so I wouldn't complain.

Looking at the rankings, my name was at the very top.

1st: Jeralt Drake — 289 points

2nd: Cynthia Albar — 270 points

3rd: Lawrence Eden — 255 points

Lawrence stared up at the scores, his mouth hanging open in disbelief.

"289 points...? That’s higher than the all-time record! Just how many points did you rack up...?"

"Actually, I’m wondering why it wasn't a perfect score. I took down as many examiners as I possibly could."

"Maybe it was your phrasing? They probably docked points for not acting 'knightly' or something."

"Tsk. What a pain."

Honestly, I knew that was likely the case. Being a knight wasn't just about being the strongest. But considering I wiped the floor with them and only lost eleven points, I'd say I succeeded in establishing my villain persona.

"Next is the written exam..."

We moved to the side to check the academic results. I had double-checked my answers and found no issues, so it should have been fine. But when I looked up, I wasn't the only one at the top.

1st: Victor Albar — 500 points

1st: Jeralt Drake — 500 points

3rd: Lawrence Eden — 495 points

4th: Cynthia Albar — 492 points

Victor Albar. As the name suggested, he was the prince of this country—the twin brother of Princess Cynthia and the genius First Prince. I thought I’d take first place alone, but it seemed he’d matched me with a perfect score.

So the 'Genius Prince' isn't just for show... Well, I got a perfect score too, so it's fine.

Naturally, my overall total put me at the very top. Lawrence slumped his shoulders beside me.

"I had no idea you were such a monster... If I’d known, I wouldn't have challenged you..."

"You’re the one who started it. I'll be enjoying that expensive meal, thanks."

"A promise is a promise. I’ll pay up."

Despite our casual banter, my mind was elsewhere. My gaze was fixed on the name in the overall second place spot: Cynthia Albar. Phase one of the plan was a total success. I couldn't help but let a dark smirk play across my lips.

Now... let the conquest of the Princess Knight begin.

The day after checking the results, moving in, and preparing for classes, I headed to the dining hall with Lawrence for breakfast.

"Yawn... You sure are a morning person..."

"It feels good to move your body first thing in the morning, you know? Besides, the dining hall should be empty at this hour."

It seemed Lawrence wasn't a morning person. I worried a bit about whether he'd be okay as a soldier, but he didn't seem groggy, so I figured he’d be fine.

"I do my morning training too, you know. You’re just way too early, Jeralt."

"There’s never enough time if you want to get stronger. But hey, to each their own."

As we talked, the dining hall came into view. Just as I’d predicted, it was empty, so we had our pick of seats. We grabbed a two-person table and went to order.

"I’ll have the Morning Set A."

"I’ll take B, please. Oh, Jeralt, you want me to pay for that?"

"Breakfast is cheap. I’m going to make you buy me something really expensive for lunch or dinner, so look forward to that."

"...You’re surprisingly ruthless."

"You’re the one who said 'the most expensive thing'!"

"Ugh... true."

We took our breakfast trays and sat down. The dining hall was equipped with magic tools for poison detection, and since this was S-Class, the menu was top-tier. In other words, it was a safe and delicious environment for a meal. The breakfast was just as good as what I ate back at the Drake estate.

"Not bad at all."

"Yeah. I can't believe we get this every day. Oh, you want to try some of this? Here, say 'ahh'!"

Lawrence scooped up some of his soup and held it out to me. In noble society, this was a massive breach of etiquette, but he was probably doing it because no one was around. Honestly, where is the demand for two guys doing the 'ahh' thing? I’d much rather have a beautiful woman glare at me in disgust while holding out a spoon.

"No. I’m eating here every morning, so I’ll just order it another time."

"Haha, I’m joking. Honestly, I wouldn't have known what to do if you actually went for it."

Then don't do it in the first place, I wanted to say. But the truth was, I enjoyed this kind of banter. Why was Lawrence so frank? Men like him were incredibly rare in this world’s aristocratic society.

"By the way, Jeralt, you went straight to your room yesterday, so you might not know, but there were some crazy rumors about you."

"Rumors? Like what?" I asked.

Lawrence nodded. Was it about the 'Violent Young Lord' thing?

"People are saying you bribed the judges."

"If I did that and got caught, I’d be disqualified and wouldn't even be able to enroll. With a little bit of thought anyone would be able tellit's fake."

It was a bit too blatant. Why would anyone bribe their way to first place? That’s just asking for a spotlight. The rumor would likely die out soon, but it would serve well enough to bolster my villainous image. The situation wasn't bad.

"I know you didn't do it. But to everyone else, Princess Cynthia was the obvious choice for top student. They probably can’t stand that some guy called the 'Violent Young Lord' took the top spot with a record-breaking score."

What a load of crap, I thought, though I understood it. Princess Cynthia’s popularity was immense. From their perspective, I had appeared out of nowhere and snatched the top spot with an overwhelming lead. I’d worked hard for it because it was essential for my Kukkoro plans, but if I were in their shoes, I’d probably be annoyed too.

"Let them talk. They’re just cowards who don't have the guts to say it to my face. I'll ignore them."

"You’ve got a thick skin. Is that why you ignored them last time, too?"

"Pretty much. It’s a baseless rumor. I’ve done nothing wrong, so no matter how much they dig, they won’t find any dirt on me."

Lawrence shook his head with a wry smile.

"It seems my future commander is more of a big shot than I imagined."

"You got a problem with that?"

"Nope. It’s perfect."

We finished our breakfast and headed back to our rooms for more training.

After training and a quick wash, I grabbed my bag and headed to the classroom. The campus was huge, so it was a leisurely ten-minute walk.

When I arrived at the S-Class classroom, I took the 'protagonist seat'—the one in the back row by the window, reserved for the top student.

Even the seating is determined by grades. This school really loves to make the students compete... I don't care about the lectures anyway, so this seat is a godsend.

I was sighing while getting ready for class when a shadow suddenly fell over me. I looked up and made sure to flash an intentional smirk.

"Well, if it isn't Her Highness, Princess Cynthia. Good morning. Is there something I can do for you?"

Princess Cynthia was standing right there, looking down at me with those cold eyes I found so irresistible.

"Good day to you. First of all, stop that creepy smile."

"My apologies. So, what brings you here?"

I kept the smirk on my face as I questioned her again. My next move depended entirely on how she acted. The reason I’d holed up in my room so early yesterday was to simulate every possible scenario over and over, ensuring my plan to capture this perfect Kukkoro heroine wouldn't fail. I wasn't letting her get away.

"Your 289 points in the practical exam... how did you get them?"

"I thought you had no interest in a sword without justice?"

"I don’t. However, I have become interested in your sword. I wish to know how one can wield such power without a grand purpose."

Hm, she was surprisingly calm. She wasn't falling for my provocations. I thought she’d be a more prideful, hot-headed princess, but maybe not. Should I scrap Plan A?

"It's true that my sword may not possess the 'justice' you speak of, Princess."

"Then—"

"But even I have things I wish to protect. More importantly, I have a dream I would trade my very life to achieve. That is all."

"——!"

Normally, interrupting royalty was the height of insolence. But right now, Cynthia was completely overwhelmed by my aura. At this moment, I controlled the room.

"Are we finished? If so, I shall—"

"Wait! I’m not finished..."

"Calm down, Cynthia."

I was slightly surprised by her persistence, but someone stepped in to stop her. I turned to see a male student with the same radiant blonde hair as the princess. I knew this person. He was someone I didn't particularly want to meet, yet someone I had to meet.

"...! Brother...!"

"It has been a while, Jeralt Drake. Or should I be more formal? You are the top student now, after all."

"Don't be ridiculous, Your Highness, Prince Victor. The House of Drake exists only to serve the Royal Family."

First Prince Victor Albar. He was born with a weak constitution and lacked talent in swordsmanship, but he possessed a brilliant mind that more than compensated for it. Even though I knew I could crush him in a duel, Prince Victor exuded an indescribable pressure.

I didn't expect him to show up here, I thought. Victor was the ultimate wild card in my quest to conquer Cynthia; I had no idea how he’d move.

"My sister was out of line so soon after enrollment. Could you do me a favor and let it slide?"

"It wasn't trouble, merely a conversation. I feel honored to speak with Princess Cynthia; I could never feel anger."

"Heh, is that so? Then I shall take my leave."

Victor returned to his seat. I’d actually gained something by speaking with Cynthia again. This was definitely going to lead into a Kukkoro move.

Now... I just need to see how the wild card, Prince Victor, affects things...

The tension in the room was palpable after my interaction with the royals, but a bell rang at the perfect time to break it. A young male teacher entered the room. He confirmed everyone was seated, gave a small nod, and spoke.

"I am Eric Riley, your homeroom teacher. I plan to be in charge of this year’s S-Class for all three years, but for now, let’s just say I look forward to working with you for the first year."

The teacher introduced himself as Eric. The reason he said 'first year' was because there were class reshuffles every year based on grades. It wasn't uncommon for someone who started in S-Class to end up in B-Class by graduation. This school was built on that kind of ruthlessness.

"I’d like to have everyone introduce themselves... but we don’t have time for that before the entrance ceremony. We’re leaving immediately, so line up in the hallway."

Following Professor Eric’s instructions, we shuffled out into the hall. We were lined up by grade, so I was at the very front and Cynthia was right behind me. It was a position where I could easily get stabbed, but Cynthia was a proper, justice-filled heroine fit for a Kukkoro scene; she wouldn't do something as cowardly as a sneak attack.

As we walked through the building behind the professor, I felt sharp glares from behind, but Cynthia didn't make a move. We arrived at the auditorium for the ceremony and took our assigned seats. We were sitting right next to each other, and without the desks between us, it felt incredibly close.

Now then... What should my first move be?

I had about three plans to pivot this situation into a Kukkoro development. And I wasn't going to wait until we got back to the classroom. Even if the entire freshman class, the faculty, and the royal family were watching, it didn't matter. I was going full throttle from the start.

The ceremony proceeded smoothly, oblivious to my resolve. And then, the moment finally came.

"Freshman Representative Address: Jeralt Drake."

"Present."

I stood up as my name was called. The representative speech—a perfect time to cause a stir. I pulled a script from my pocket, one I’d grumbled about having to write on short notice. If they’d told me earlier, I could have come up with something more interesting, but since I had so little time, I’d have to improvise.

"I would like to thank you for holding this entrance ceremony for us today. I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to give the representative address at this prestigious military academy... or so I thought at first."

I immediately veered off the boring, serious script I’d prepared. Time for a heavy jab. Ignoring the murmuring from the crowd, I continued.

"It seems there is no one in this school capable of being my opponent. It’s quite a letdown. Even the top spot was far too easy to take."

I glanced toward Cynthia. She was glaring at me with eyes full of rage. Good. Get angrier. Throw it all at me. That’s what makes a Kukkoro moment worth it.

"I do not turn away challengers. If any of you are foolish enough to think you can beat me, I will face you any time, anywhere. And I will crush you, over and over again, until every person in this school understands that I am the strongest and most invincible. So... please do your best to at least keep me from getting bored, won’t you?"

With that, I stepped off the stage without even a bow. The auditorium, which had been peaceful if a bit tense, was now deathly silent.

Heh... now that’s a villain’s work. No need to be bound by common sense. A true villain deviates from it. Now Cynthia will see me as even more of a monster.

The ceremony had to continue despite the icy atmosphere. The moderator’s voice was strained as they moved the program along. I watched with a smirk, but the mood shifted the moment a young girl took the stage.

"Hello, fellow freshmen. I am Grace Carpenter, the Student Council President."

Her voice was crystal clear, losing none of its charm even through the microphone. It was a voice that captivated everyone who heard it. And her appearance was just as stunning as her voice—if not more so. Her long, pale purple hair swayed as she offered a gentle, enchanting smile.

But despite her lovely appearance, she dominated the room with a single word, drawing every eye to her and reclaiming the atmosphere I’d frozen. I was genuinely impressed. Grace finished her brilliant congratulatory speech, bowed with perfect grace, and left the stage.

I see... Grace Carpenter. I'll have to remember that name.

I etched Grace Carpenter’s name into my mind. As a person to watch out for—and perhaps as a future Kukkoro target.

After the ceremony, our S-Class returned to the classroom. I sat in my seat and listened to Professor Eric.

"That’s all for announcements. We’ll use the remaining time for introductions. Please stand and introduce yourselves in order of grades. Starting with Jeralt Drake."

At this academy, teachers generally didn't use honorifics with students. They only used polite speech if they chose to, or when addressing royalty. This professor seemed to be the blunt type. I didn't mind; it felt more natural given my memories of schools in my previous life.

"I am the eldest son of Marquis Drake, Jeralt Drake. I won't bite, so let’s just get along or whatever."

Twelve of the twenty students in this class were commoners. My casual tone, combined with the earlier speech, left the room in stunned silence. No one reacted, but I felt a sharp glare from the side. I sat down, satisfied, and the person in the next seat stood up.

"I am the Second Princess of the Albar Kingdom, Cynthia Albar. I hope we can all work together to improve ourselves. And... next year, I will be the one giving the representative address as the top student."

Cynthia shot me a look. She was still smiling, but her eyes were definitely not. Oh boy, she really has it out for me... Which was exactly what I wanted.

Once Cynthia sat down, Lawrence stood up.

"I’m Lawrence Eden, the eldest son of Count Eden. I’d be happy if we could be friends."

He acted so normal despite always saying weird things to me. I decided not to call him out on it since my own intro wasn't much better—though I was aware I’d gone a bit overboard with the ceremony speech.

"I suppose it is my turn. I am the First Prince of Albar, Victor Albar. As long as I am here, I am merely a student. Please, feel free to speak with me casually."

When Victor spoke, the room went silent again, just like it had for me. Victor lowered his brows and gave a wry smile at the reaction.

"Oh? Am I already disliked? That is tragic."

"Brother, even if you say you are just a student, it is a bit much to ask people to speak casually to the First Prince," Cynthia said with an exasperated sigh, speaking for the entire class.

I didn't want to get involved with him either. I’d rather spend my time messing with Cynthia.

"I suppose you are right. Very well. Regardless, I look forward to working with you all."

After Victor finished, the introductions continued down the line. I didn't really know much about my classmates. Again, twelve of them were commoners. I’d never met them, and while I’m sure my father had looked into their backgrounds, it was only to see if they were a threat. I’d been too focused on Cynthia to care. I’d hoped for something interesting, but unfortunately, none of the introductions caught my attention.

"Well, that concludes the introductions. This group of twenty will be the S-Class for this year. Now, we’ll move straight into the first lesson."

The bell had rung during the introductions. Back in my old life, I’d have been annoyed by the lack of a break, but now I was having too much fun to care.

"The first lesson of the military academy is a tour of the facilities. Move out. Follow me."

The professor left the room, and we followed him in a line. Basically, a campus tour. I wondered if we really needed one when maps were everywhere, but I knew a very important event was coming up, so I had no complaints.

"The academy is so huge, I guess a tour is tradition. But don’t you think there are too many training grounds? I wonder how much tax money they poured into this place..." Lawrence whispered.

"The returns have been worth it. The country has definitely become stronger since the academy was established."

I idly comforted the complaining Lawrence as we walked at the back of the group. What I said was actually true; the academy was founded about eighty years ago, and by implementing a meritocracy that didn't tolerate bribery or corruption, it helped discover talented people and prevented the rise of totally rotten nobles. You can't stop it entirely, but you can mitigate it.

"I guess you’re right. Our position as soldiers apparently changed once military affairs became more prioritized," Lawrence added.

"Yeah. I heard the military used to be treated like workhorses for the court nobles."

A life of constant war and being treated like a pack animal in another world didn't sound like fun. I had my ancestors to thank for raising the House of Drake to the rank of Ministry of Military Affairs through their battlefield achievements. Thanks to them, I could pursue my dreams.

As I was silently thanking my ancestors, a hand was suddenly placed on my shoulder.

"You two seem to be having an interesting conversation. Mind if I join?"

I turned around slowly to find Prince Victor wearing an amused smile. He wasn't a warrior, so I’d sensed him approaching, but I hadn't expected us to be his target.

"Prince Victor!?" Lawrence gasped.

"I don’t mind. We are classmates, after all. Let’s be friends," I said.

Victor gave a delighted smirk. Because of the upcoming event, I was feeling generous. I could play along with Victor for a bit.

"Then let me ask you a question right away. Jeralt, what do you think of the current state of this country?"

"The 'state'?"

"Exactly. Just tell me whatever comes to mind."

I wondered if he was testing me. He kept smiling, making it impossible to read his thoughts. But I couldn't not answer, so I decided to give a slightly provocative, blunt response. If he wanted to hate me, let him.

"On a global scale, we're stuck as a mid-sized nation. But from the perspective of a noble within the country... I’d say it’s hard to call the current reign 'stable'."

"Wait—!? Jeralt!?" Lawrence hissed.

But it was the truth. It was the nature of nations, but the Albar Royal Family’s influence had been waning with each generation. Currently, they were only holding onto power because over half the military was Royalist and the House of Drake was so powerful. They were walking a tightrope against the Aristocratic faction every day.

"Ha... haha... Hahahaha! I see. You actually said it, Jeralt."

"Did I say something wrong?"

"No, you weren't wrong about a single thing. I appreciate your honesty more than you know, Jeralt Drake."

Victor laughed heartily and walked ahead. Lawrence and I exchanged a look.

"What was that about?" Lawrence asked.

"Who knows? Why are you so worried about me offending the royals anyway?"

"Because that's what nobles do! You're not supposed to be that blunt!"

"Whatever, calm down. Victor was laughing, so all's well that ends well."

"Ugh... Do you not fear anything...?"

I ignored Lawrence’s grumbling and looked around. We were currently in the wing that housed classrooms for 'minor' subjects like music and pharmacology. About half the class was chatting, while the other half was paying attention. Cynthia, of course, was the leader of the attentive group.

I wondered if this half-baked tour where nobody was listening was actually okay. Though, as the leader of the 'not listening' group, I was hardly one to talk.

"Do you have a moment?"

I was looking around while half-listening to the professor when a female student approached us. Victor first, and now her? I was starting to get annoyed. When I looked at her, she was glaring at us with an incredibly displeased expression.

Wait... who is this? I don't know her.

That's Mia Davis, from our class. She just introduced herself earlier. Did you not listen to a single word? Lawrence whispered back, looking exasperated.

Once he gave me the name, the memory of her introduction came back. Mia Wilhelm Davis. She was the Third Princess of the Wilhelm Kingdom, an ally and neighbor of Albar, here as an international student. She was average height or maybe a bit shorter, and her chest was... well, considerably more modest than Cynthia’s. Her slightly upturned eyes reminded me of when I first met Margaret—she had a strong will. Her bright pink hair was tied in twin tails.

"Can I help you, Highness? I’m quite busy right now, so I don't have much to say to you."

People might think I was being rude to a foreign princess, but while Albar and Wilhelm were allies, Wilhelm was essentially a vassal state. There was a massive gap in national power, and while she was 'studying abroad,' she was effectively a hostage. Within Albar, she had about as much authority as a Count.

"Oh? You won't even let a classmate talk to you? For a top student, you're quite narrow-minded."

Despite the meritocracy, social standing usually didn't just vanish, as we’d seen with the silence during Victor’s intro. But this girl was using informal speech with me, a Marquis’s son, despite the rumors about me and her own precarious position. I was starting to find this Mia girl a little interesting.

"I’ll listen if you have something to say. Since I have no choice."

"Thanks for nothing. I only have one thing to say: I hate people like you...! I’m going to drag you down! Don't think you can stay the top student forever!"

She bared her hostility openly. Nobles usually hid their true feelings and fought behind the scenes, but this girl was refreshingly honest. Declaring war like this right to my face... was she just stupid?

"Heh... hahah... I see. You're an interesting person."

"Interesting...!? Are you mocking me!?"

"You can take it that way if you like. If you're frustrated, get stronger. That's the kind of world we live in now."

"Ugh...! Just you wait...!"

Mia spat out a line straight out of a low-tier villain’s script and stormed off. Lawrence walked over, wearing a wry smile.

"First Princess Cynthia, and now her... You sure have a knack for getting girls to hate you."

"I don't care. Whether I’m loved or hated doesn't matter to me."

"It's good to be confident. But she’s a special case due to political reasons, so try to be at least a little patient with her."

"Yeah, I know."

Nobles were a constant source of trouble. Dealing with foreign royalty, even from a vassal state, was bound to be a headache. However...

The proud princess of a weak nation, huh... How intriguing.

I let a small smile escape. I’d have to add her to my Kukkoro candidate list.

After touring the campus for about an hour, our S-Class group eventually came to a halt. We were standing before a dedicated training ground, exclusive to the S-Class students of each grade.

"This is where you’ll be conducting your training," Professor Eric announced. "You can use it after school as well, provided you submit an application. The equipment here is far superior to the other training grounds, so make sure to put it to good use."

The entire class stepped inside to inspect the facility. But I already knew. I knew exactly what was about to happen next.

"Alright, that’s enough looking around. Fall in!" the professor barked.

The students gathered. I was doing my absolute best to stifle my laughter as I imagined the scene about to unfold. I was actually trembling a little, which earned me a suspicious look from Lawrence.

"We’re going to have a single mock battle. Jeralt, Princess Cynthia. Step forward."

Exactly. It was an academy tradition: after the tour, the top student and the runner-up of the practical exam would face off in a mock match at the training grounds. For my 'Infinite Kukkoro Plan' regarding Princess Cynthia, this was the most perfect opportunity I could have asked for.

In this match, I would show her the overwhelming gap in our strength. But simply defeating her to see her Kukkoro wouldn’t be enough... This was the Infinite Kukkoro Plan, after all.

I stepped forward, and Princess Cynthia did the same. We stood side-by-side before Professor Eric.

"This is a light mock battle, but that doesn’t mean you should hold back," the professor said. "Show us your strength. Set an example for the rest of your peers as the top students of this year."

"Understood," I replied.

"Yes. I shall do my utmost to fight with the honor befitting a princess of the Albar Kingdom," Cynthia declared.

The professor handed us wooden training swords. They were identical to the ones used during the entrance exam, allowing us to choose from several different weights and lengths. It seemed the professor had already gauged what would suit us; he handed me a sword that felt perfect in both balance and reach.

We took our positions in the center of the training ground. The rest of the class sat in the raised spectator seating, while the professor acted as the referee.

"I still do not believe you truly deserve the top spot," Cynthia said, her voice low. "Therefore... I will prove it in this match. I will show you that a sword without justice possesses no power."

"Is that so? Then I shall prove the opposite. I will give you my answer: justice is not what is required for strength."

How was that?! How did that sound?! Totally like a villain! Only a villain says stuff like "giving an answer" to deny justice. My path to Kukkoro wouldn't end with Princess Cynthia. I had to firmly establish my character as a proper antagonist.

"Are we finished talking, Princess?" I asked.

"Yes. Thank you. What we must exchange now are not words, but blades. You may begin whenever you are ready."

"I am ready when you are."

We both leveled our swords. The gentle smile that usually graced Cynthia’s face had vanished completely, replaced by the steely gaze of a warrior. Even from my position, I could tell she was incredibly focused. Her sharp, piercing eyes were strikingly dignified—and beautiful.

"Jeralt! Kick her ass!" Lawrence shouted.

"Hahaha! I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got, Jeralt! Cynthia, give it your all!" Prince Victor added.

The two of them seemed to be having a grand old time. Honestly, was it even okay for the First Prince to be cheering for me, even if he didn't use my name directly? Well, this was basically entertainment for me too, so whatever.

"Begin!"

The instant the command left the professor's lips, Cynthia closed the distance in a flash. Her explosive speed was far beyond what I’d expected from a girl, but I felt no panic. I caught her opening strike with room to spare. After all, Margaret—enhanced by her Mana Shroud—was deathly fast. This was nothing by comparison.

"So... it wasn't a matter of bribery after all," she muttered through gritted teeth.

"Of course not. Does a man with a face as honest as mine look like he’d resort to such petty tricks?"

"Ugh! How shameless...! If that 'honest face' of yours were real, those rumors wouldn't exist in the first place!"

Wearing a bitter expression, Cynthia used a backstep to create distance again. Did she not like my face? That made me very happy. Please, keep hating me just like that.

"Aren't you going to attack? This is your chance to beat the top student, you know."

"I don't need you to tell me that. And stop mocking me!"

"My apologies."

Our blades began to clash again as we engaged in close-quarters combat. I’d only caught a glimpse of her during the exams, but the princess before me was genuinely skilled. I could feel that her high marks weren't just a courtesy for her royal status. If I were still eight years old and had only just received my mastery of the Akatsuki Style, she might have pushed me even with my Mana Shroud active.

"Princess Cynthia."

"What... is it...?! We are... in the middle... of a fight...!"

"Who was your master? Your swordsmanship is meticulous and beautiful, even if it can’t reach me."

"That was one comment too many...! Besides... I have no obligation... to answer you...!"

Cynthia’s assault grew even fiercer. With her golden hair swaying like fine silk, her figure in combat was the literal embodiment of a 'Princess Knight' from a fairy tale. My body surged with delight at the fact that I had the best seat in the house to witness her bravery.

"I see. If you won't tell me, I'm not that interested anyway, so it's fine."

"If you keep underestimating me... you're going to get hurt!"

"Wait—!?"

While our blades were locked, she suddenly launched a powerful kick. Despite being fired from an unstable position, the kick was sharp and precise. I instinctively threw out my left arm to block it. A dull throb of pain shot through me, but it was better than taking it to the solar plexus. It was an unexpected blow that utilized a woman’s natural flexibility—a move difficult for a male physique to replicate. I had to give her credit.

"Tsk... You even blocked that...?"

"That was a bit unladylike, Princess. Wouldn't your brother scold you for such poor footwork?"

"Shut up...! Just be quiet...!"

Judging by the way she looked away, I’d hit a nerve. Was Prince Victor actually scary?

"Ahahaha! What's wrong, Jeralt?! I’m looking forward to seeing your power, so get serious already! Hahaha!"

"That wasn't like you, Jeralt! She totally caught you off guard!"

The jeers of a certain First Prince and a Count’s son echoed through the training hall. I ignored the two idiots and refocused on Cynthia. Her expressive face made her emotions easy to read, which made her charming as a woman and perfect for my goal of seeing Kukkoro, but as a member of the royalty, I couldn't help but worry about her a little.

"Hah!"

I caught her sword once more as she lunged. I decided to try and rile her up a bit, just to see if she’d bite.

"Princess Cynthia, are you familiar with a small, lovely field of pink flowers?"

"What? What are you talking about all of a sudden?"

"Oh, just small talk. You see, that flower field isn't just pink; it has a tiny point of white as a highlight."

Cynthia tilted her head in confusion. Well, yeah. If my opponent started talking about flower fields in the middle of a duel, I’d doubt their sanity, too.

"In the middle of that vast pink expanse, there’s a small, brilliantly white sparkle. It’s truly magnificent."

"Are you alright? Are you... trying to woo me or something?"

"I wouldn't dare. It's just... I saw a cute little bear, and I couldn't help myself."

The moment I said that, Cynthia’s face turned bright red. She’d realized exactly what I was talking about. She glared at me, her face flushed all the way to her ears.

"You... You are the absolute worst...!"

"Wait, isn't that a bit uncalled for? It was an unavoidable accident."

Most of the class was whispering, unable to understand the context. However, Prince Victor, who understood exactly what I’d said, was clutching his stomach and laughing hysterically.

"Pfft... hahahaha! He's right, it was an unavoidable accident! Ahahaha! Give it up, Cynthia! Jeralt isn't at fault here!"

Wow, I'm the one who said it, but you're heartless, man. You're her brother! Back her up! Why are you backing me up?!

"To think someone like you saw them...! Brother, you better be ready for what's coming later...!"

At her words, Prince Victor stopped laughing and immediately sat in a formal seiza position. His face went dead serious. Is the power balance in that family skewed toward the sister? Well, she was stronger than him.

"I’d appreciate it if you could forgive me, since it was an accident..."

"I will never forgive you."

Cynthia was wearing her school uniform. Which meant she was wearing a skirt. At the moment of her kick, my sixth sense had taken over. Without thinking, I had used my Mana Shroud to enhance my kinetic vision. And so, I saw it.

Amidst the field of pink cloth, there was a small, cute white ribbon. And there, meticulously embroidered not in the center—as they often are in manga—but on the far left edge, was a tiny bear. Because of a similar experience I’d had in the past—or rather, thanks to it—I had instinctively used my Mana Shroud. It really was an unavoidable accident. Yes.

"I will absolutely never forgive you. I’m ending this with the next strike."

Cynthia stepped back and leveled her sword again. Her eyes held both reason and rage. But before we finished this, there was one thing I desperately wanted to ask her.

"Princess Cynthia. May I ask one question?"

"...Depends on the question."

"Fair enough."

This had nothing to do with the 'Infinite Kukkoro Plan.' It was pure curiosity. But... I had to know.

"What is... 'justice' to you?"

It was a question asked at a time when I could have easily been scolded for ruining the mood of the match. I didn't know if she’d answer, but I wanted to hear it.

"I didn't expect such a question from you."

"I was just curious."

Cynthia lowered her sword. She looked me straight in the eye.

"What justice is... to me?"

"Yes. If you are willing to tell me, I would very much like to know."

"I don't mind. Helping the weak and crushing the strong. My sword exists for the sake of those who cry out for help. I become strong so that I can help them, so that I can protect them. That is my justice."

Ah...

So that was it. I only cared about protecting my beloved family and the people of my fief. I never gave a thought to some nameless stranger. But this princess said it without a hint of hesitation. She truly, from the bottom of her heart, spoke those idealistic words.

But—no, because of that—she shone with a dazzling radiance. It was because she sincerely desired those ideals.

I like her even more now...! I will absolutely make the 'Infinite Kukkoro Plan' a success for her...! That will be my way of cheering her on.

"...I see. Thank you for telling me."

"Do you find it distasteful? My wish?"

"No. I can say with all sincerity that it is a noble and beautiful thing. However... It seems we are destined to remain incompatible."

"That is a shame."

With that, we both raised our swords simultaneously. Our focus intensified, both of us signaling that the next exchange would be the last. The jeers and cheers from a moment ago had been replaced by a heavy silence.

"Here I come."

"Likewise."

We both kicked off the ground at the same time. As the distance closed, we began to read each other's spacing. How would the opponent move? How should I react? A single misread of that distance would mean defeat. Because we both understood this, we continued to probe without showing a major opening, looking for the perfect moment to strike.

I have the advantage in power... Cynthia has the advantage in speed and number of strikes... If I take a big swing and miss, it’s over. I have to stay on the defensive.

Since I wasn't using Mana Shroud, our speed was about even, making it difficult to go on the offensive. But the moment she committed to a technique would be my opening. To an outsider, it might have looked like I was being pushed back, but because I was blocking every attack, it was Cynthia who was consuming more stamina. The advantage was mine.

"Hah! Yah! Hyaa!"

"What’s wrong, Princess? Starting to lose your breath?"

"Be quiet!"

Cynthia leaped back several paces. I could have pursued her, but she was clearly taking a stance to unleash some kind of technique. I instantly judged that charging in would be a mistake. I planted my feet firmly and leveled my sword.

"Albar Swordsmanship..."

"Akatsuki Style, Slashing Art..."

Now... What have you got, Princess Cynthia?!

I honed my senses, ready to react to whatever she threw at me. Cynthia was the one to take the first step. She lunged much deeper than I’d anticipated. From that deep lunge, she suddenly leaped upward.

Low...! No, she’s using her flexibility for an aerial attack, just like that kick!

"Soaring Form! Float Slash!"

"Moonlight Strike Down!"

Cynthia’s upward-swinging blade clashed head-on with my downward strike. In that split second, a thunderous boom echoed through the hall. Along with a powerful gust of wind, a single sword went flying, hitting the ground with a sharp clatter.

"That’s enough. The winner is Jeralt Drake."

The professor’s cold call rang through the training ground. I let out a breath and sheathed my wooden sword.

"I... lost...?"

Cynthia slumped to her knees. Her head was bowed, her face hidden. But from her posture and her voice, I could feel a staggering amount of frustration radiating from her.

"I’ll admit, that was a good match," I said.

I knelt before her. I reached out, gently took her chin in my hand, and tilted her face up. Cynthia glared at me with eyes that were a chaotic mix of rage, helplessness, and humiliation. In that instant, an indescribable sensation shivered down my spine.

"Ugh...! To think I’d lose to someone like you... to a sword that holds no justice..."

Is she going to do it?! Is the Kukkoro finally going to show itself to me?!

I fought back the urge to grin like a maniac and offered her a hand.

"Do you understand now? Justice is not what a sword requires."

Cynthia slapped my hand away and stood up. She turned her back and began to walk away.

Heh... heh heh...! She really is a masterpiece! Simply marvelous! Seeing a real Kukkoro is worth more than a mountain of doujinshi!

It was overwhelming. In both my past and current lives combined, I had never felt such a surge of joy as I did in that moment. That was how wonderful Cynthia was. I couldn't thank the King and Queen enough for bringing her into this world. It was a shame I didn't get to see the actual words this time, but her expression was top-tier. I’d save the main event for later.

"...Professor, if you'll excuse me."

Cynthia spoke without turning around. The professor gave a small sigh and nodded.

"I was planning on dismissing everyone after this anyway. Don't be late tomorrow, and don't forget your things."

"...Understood."

Cynthia walked out of the training hall without a single backward glance. Watching her go, I was literally trembling with emotion. Tears of joy were threatening to spill; I had to fight to keep them back.

Heh heh... Ahahahaha! I'm never letting you go, Princess Cynthia!

With a dark smirk, I turned and walked toward Lawrence and the others.

~Side: Cynthia~

"The Violent Young Lord, you say?"

The first time I heard that rumor was at a party, about a year before the military academy entrance exams. It was a casual gathering for families close to the royalty—the so-called Royalist faction. I happened to overhear a young noble lady talking about it.

"P-Princess Cynthia! Thank you for inviting us today."

"Good day. More importantly, would you mind if I joined your conversation?"

"O-oh, yes! Of course!"

I decided to join them to hear the story. For my sake, the lady started from the beginning.

"Actually, lately there has been someone referred to as the 'Violent Young Lord.' He supposedly attacked and injured the son of Count Morn."

"And who might this person be?"

"The heir to the House of Drake, Lord Jeralt Drake."

The moment I heard the name, a dull ache started in my temples. The House of Drake was a prestigious family known to everyone in the Albar Kingdom. They managed the military and were the most powerful pillar of the Royalist faction. Their influence was so great that people whispered they were the 'Drake faction' rather than the Royalists. For the heir of such a house to be the subject of such rumors was a catastrophic blow to the Royal Family.

"What exactly happened?"

"Lord Devitt Morn was traveling through the Drake fief when he was suddenly challenged to a duel. However, there are many conflicting rumors and no real evidence, so everyone is confused. But it seems to be a fact that Lord Devitt and Lord Jeralt did indeed duel."

"I see... To think such a thing happened..."

I thanked the lady and left. I wanted to tell my brother immediately, but I couldn't just leave in the middle of the party. I kept the information to myself until the event ended, then rushed to see him. But my brother only gave a wry smile and nodded.

"The Violent Young Lord? Ah, I’ve heard those rumors. Father knows as well."

"What—!? Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because there was no need. Even if you knew, there’s nothing you could do. Besides, we don't want to cause trouble with the House of Drake over something so trivial."

Are you saying we have to endure it just because it's the Drakes...?! And to think I was the only one who didn't know...!

I was annoyed by my brother's comment, which sounded as if we were just trying to stay in the Drakes' good graces. Furthermore, since I wasn't directly involved in politics, his words were logically sound, which only added to my frustration. This brother of mine was rational to a fault. As a family member, he was a kind brother, but when we interacted as Prince and Princess, he showed a cold, pragmatic side.

"...Excuse me. I shall take my leave."

"Very well. Oh, let me give you one piece of advice."

"...What is it?"

"You aren't seeing the whole picture. You only think you understand. Etch that into your mind."

"...Understood."

I returned to my room, my brother's words lingering in my head.

Time passed, and the day finally came to move into the dorms. I was in a carriage with my brother, heading toward the academy.

"You seem to be in a good mood, Brother."

"Do I?"

"Yes. Your face is the same as always, but I can tell."

It was a tiny change that only a twin could notice. My brother, who usually spoke to the lords without letting his true intentions show, seemed genuinely upbeat today.

"Hahaha! I suppose I can't hide anything from you. It's nothing special; I’m just looking forward to meeting someone."

"When did you find the time to get a mistress?"

"I don't have a mistress. I’m just looking forward to meeting Jeralt Drake."

The moment he said that name, I couldn't help but grimace. A year had passed, but the rumors of the 'Violent Young Lord' had yet to fade. When I met him during the exams, my only impression was that he was an unpleasant, somewhat strange man. That flippant smile of his gave me the chills.

"You look like you want to know why I want to see him."

"Of course I do."

"When we first met, I felt overwhelmed by his presence. That man is harboring something massive inside him."

"——!"

My brother had met Jeralt Drake before. But it was the first time I’d ever heard him give someone such a high evaluation.

"I want to see for myself just how insane he really is, while we're in the same class. That's all."

"I see..."

"Well, you’ll understand soon enough. He’s a man you’ll never get bored of watching."

"I’m not looking for entertainment."

I let out a silent sigh, troubled by my brother's strange fascinations. However, once we arrived at the school, I was forced to pay attention to him whether I wanted to or not. Because—

"What...!? I’m... second place...!?"

The name at the very top of the results wasn't mine. And the man who reigned in first place with an all-time record score was him. Being defeated by the 'Violent Young Lord' filled me with a fierce sense of regret.

"Ho. You did well, Cynthia. Still, Jeralt Drake really is something else."

"Why... Why did I lose to a man like him...?"

"You shouldn't ask me. You should see it for yourself. You’ll be classmates, after all. You’ll have plenty of chances."

"...Yes."

And just as my brother predicted, the chance came immediately. I was to have a mock battle with that man during the tour on our first day. We faced each other, wooden training swords in hand.

"I still do not believe you truly deserve the top spot. Therefore... I will prove it in this match. I will show you that a sword without justice possesses no power."

"Is that so? Then I shall prove the opposite. I will give you my answer: justice is not what is required for strength."

This man...! Judging by his physique and his stance, he’s no amateur; he’s a warrior... I have to go all out and not drop my guard...

I told myself this and fought with everything I had from the start. And yet—

Why...? Why is this man so strong...?! No matter how much I attack, no matter how much I try to shake him, he doesn't budge! He's like a wall!

I thought I could reach him. I believed that the sword I had polished so desperately for the sake of justice would surely prevail. And yet, there was an overwhelming gap in our strength, as if an adult were fighting a child. To a bystander, it might have looked like we were evenly matched or that I was pushing him back, but as the person actually fighting him, I felt the difference in our power more acutely than anyone.

I will land at least one blow...! I won't let it end like this!

"Albar Swordsmanship... Soaring Form! Float Slash!"

"Akatsuki Style, Slashing Art... Moonlight Strike Down."

It was my final, all-out strike, carrying all of my past efforts. But my blade never reached him. With heartless ease, he parried my sword and sent it flying. I could only watch in a daze as my sword fell to the ground in slow motion.

"That’s enough. The winner is Jeralt Drake."

"I... lost...?"

The strength left my body, and I fell to my knees. I was frustrated. That single word filled my entire being. I had staked my pride, been humiliated by his comments about my... underwear... and yet I had been defeated without being allowed to do a single thing, as easily as snapping a twig. The unchangeable reality weighed down on me with unbearable heaviness.

"I’ll admit, that was a good match," Jeralt said.

He knelt before me and gently lifted my chin with his hand. His handsome features were more infuriating than anything else. But as the loser, all I could do was glare at him in petty defiance. I knew I looked pathetic and miserable. But if I didn't do at least that, I felt like my heart would simply break.

Before the tears could fall, I brushed his hand away, stood up, and walked off.

To think a man like that saw my underwear... And he crushed my justice and my pride... How miserable I am...

I couldn't forgive my own helplessness. I was pathetic, wretched... and I hated myself for it.

"I will definitely defeat that man...! With my own two hands...!"

With that resolve in my heart, I looked up at the sky, struggling to keep the tears from spilling over.
