Chapter 2 - Farewell Day

Five days had passed since I began living peacefully with Luna──.

"Seito-sama..."

Suddenly, Luna hugged me from behind.

"W-What’s wrong?"

I still wasn’t used to her affectionate gestures, so I tried not to pay attention to the loud beating of my heart and spoke to Luna.

"The day we promised has come..."

"Eh...?"

The day we promised... Could it be that today is the day we part ways...?

Up until yesterday, Luna hadn’t said anything.

It felt too sudden.

"Why all of a sudden...?"

"I had decided that today would be the day... I’m sorry for not being able to tell you earlier..."

It seemed that Luna had already decided that today would be the day we part.

If that’s the case, she could’ve told me earlier...

I couldn’t help but think that way.

After all, I needed some time to prepare myself mentally.

"Does it really have to be today...?"

"If I wait any longer, it would likely cause a big commotion..."

A big commotion?

Were the people who captured Luna going to create some sort of incident to flush her out...?

I didn’t want her to be sent back to those men.

"I’m fine with it, so you can stay here as long as you want..."

I gently placed my hand over the one Luna had resting on my body.

Originally, we had agreed on just a few days, but during these five days, nothing problematic had occurred.

I had gone out to buy ingredients and other necessities, but I hadn’t run into any dangerous people.

Once I start going to school, she’ll have to wait at home alone, but we’ll be able to live as we have been so far.

After graduation, I could get a job, earn money, and take care of her.

Being unable to go outside might cause her stress... but it should be better than being with those dangerous people.

However──.

"Thank you... Seito-sama, you’re truly so kind... But I’m sorry. I must return."

It seemed that Luna had made up her mind.

I didn’t want to suppress her will, nor did I have the right to.

"I see..."

"Um, could you hug me again...? Please give me courage..."

Luna pulled away from me and made her request.

This was probably her last plea.

I turned to face Luna and gently embraced her.

"Please don’t do anything dangerous, okay...?"

"I’ll be fine. I plan to return to Seito-sama’s side again."

That was probably her way of reassuring me.

Luna had mentioned she was working toward solving the root problem, but if she returned to those men, I couldn’t believe she’d be safe.

I really didn’t want her to go.

To make sure my feelings reached her, I hugged her tightly.

"──Thank you, I’m okay now, so..."

After we held each other for a short time, Luna lightly tapped my back, signaling for me to let go.

I slowly let go, and she gave me a lonely smile.

I couldn’t help but think that, deep down, she probably didn’t want to leave either──.

"Luna──"

"I’m sorry, I need to make a call now."

Before I could say anything, she spoke first.

When I fell silent, she smiled again and turned on her smartphone.

It seemed that she had turned it off before we met, likely as a precaution against GPS tracking.

She then started dialing a number.

『──Yes, I apologize for the trouble. I’m fine, so──』

From the phone came a sharp, high-pitched voice yelling angrily in English.

Although I couldn’t understand what was being said, it was clear that the person on the other end was quite upset.

Luna handled the call calmly, and once the conversation seemed to be over, she hung up.

She then looked up at me with a troubled smile.

"It might get a bit noisy, but please forgive me."

"…I see, that can’t be helped."

It seemed that Luna had shared this location with the person she had just spoken to.

It was a risky move that could have endangered both of us, and under normal circumstances, it would be hard to believe.

But she was kind and considerate.

I didn’t think she would have given away our location without a reason, so I decided to trust her.

Even if this was a mistake made out of pure naivety── I would have to accept it as my fate.

『...It’ll be okay, everything should work out…』

Luna took a deep breath and muttered to herself.

Though her nervousness was evident, there was nothing left to do now but let things unfold.

Eventually──

『──Open the door!!』

There was a loud banging on the door.

The voice sounded like a woman’s, likely the person from the earlier phone call.

"Seito-sama, could you come with me?"

"Wait, are you really planning to go out dressed like that!?"

At the moment, Luna was wearing the same oversized shirt she had on the first day.

It was supposed to be just for that one day, but she had ended up taking one of my shirts every time she needed to change, and she continued wearing it.

"This way, things will go faster," Luna said with a smile as she took my hand.

I had thought it was strange that she hadn’t changed her clothes even though someone was coming to pick her up, but I never expected her to want to go out dressed like this.

『Open the door now!!』

『We’ll open it right away, please stop yelling.』

Luna responded to the shouting from outside in a gentle voice as she reached for the doorknob.

She slowly opened the door, and──.

『Honestly, what were you thinking──!?』

The woman standing at the door, around her thirties and wearing glasses, gasped when she saw Luna's attire.

Next to her was a smaller girl who appeared younger than both me and Luna, and she too seemed surprised, her eyes wide in shock.

I couldn’t help but think, "Well, of course..." but I was still taken aback by how different the people standing there were from what I had imagined, making it hard to process the situation.

『──W-What is going on here...!? I would like an explanation...!』

The woman with glasses snapped out of her shock, her face turning bright red as she marched toward Luna, her eyebrows furrowed in anger.

She seemed furious, and I thought it might be a good idea to step in and defend Luna, but── Luna stopped me with a hand gesture.

'…………'

The young girl standing next to the glasses-wearing woman was staring at my face intently.

Who are these people…?

『There’s no need for an explanation. It’s as you see.』

Luna spread her arms and showed off her outfit to the woman with glasses.

Her gesture seemed like she was explaining her appearance.

...I was starting to feel a bit sick to my stomach.

『You don’t mean... with that man...!?』

『We slept together and embraced each other gently. In other words, we have that kind of relationship.』

'──!'

What is Luna saying?

The woman with glasses was glaring at me as if I were her worst enemy.

It was actually pretty scary...

『Please stop glaring at Seito-sama like that.』

I had no idea what was going on, as I couldn’t understand the English, but Luna was showing a rare expression of anger.

I wondered what kind of conversation they were having... I think my name came up at some point...

『Don’t you understand your position!? You are engaged, yet you do this—!』

It seemed that what Luna had said was a big mistake, as the glasses-wearing woman’s anger escalated further. Her eyes looked like they were about to pop out.

『I'm not okay with that engagement. It was something my mothers decided without asking me.』

Luna remained composed, facing the yelling woman with a dignified attitude, as if unshaken. During the time we had spent together, I had only seen her as a sweet, somewhat spoiled lady who liked to lean on others, but it seemed there was another side to her.

『Stop being selfish! You had the audacity to say you wanted to visit Japan as a pre-wedding trip, and once we made that happen, you disappear without a word. Your mother and father are angry...! And then, to have a physical relationship with someone who is not even your fiancé, what are you going to tell the other side...! This could lead to an annulment...!』

What should I do, should I stop this...?

She’s seriously losing it...

Even though I couldn’t understand the English, it was clear from her tone and body language that the woman with glasses was furious.

Luna, who was facing the woman with glasses head-on and maintaining such a dignified attitude, was truly impressive.

『I already intend to.』

『Enough of this—!』

Just as the glasses-wearing woman was about to escalate her anger towards Luna, the young girl with the baby face moved.

『──The one who needs to stop is you. Even though you're a tutor, your mouth is too much.』

'──!?'

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what had just happened.

The moment the young girl moved, the woman with glasses lost consciousness and collapsed onto the floor.

『Aira....』

Luna referred to the baby-faced girl as Aira.

It seemed that was her name.

『I apologize for making you uncomfortable.』

『No, it’s fine. Thank you as always..』

As Aira bowed her head toward Luna, Luna returned a kind smile.

She didn’t seem worried about the fallen woman at all, but I wondered if she was okay...

“Sorry for the disturbance..”

It seemed like Luna was signaling that the conversation was over as she spoke to me.

Should I comment on this...?

“Is that woman okay...?”

“She’s fine. I just knocked her out, that’s all.”

Aira answered my question in a calm manner.

It seemed she could speak Japanese as well.

Aira was a very cute and adorable girl with shiny silver hair, a bob cut that covered one eye, and a youthful, petite frame. However, her demeanor was very cool.

What exactly is she, after that movement...?

At the very least, I think this girl is far stronger than the men who tried to abduct Luna.

"Ah, this girl is Aira Sylvian. She’s my caretaker and bodyguard. It was also this girl who helped me escape."

Luna cheerfully smiled and brought Aira in front of me.

I feel like I just heard something outrageous said so casually...?

"Uh, caretaker and bodyguard...?"

What exactly is Luna...?

Wasn’t she just a girl who was forced to work for some bad people, someone with a debt to pay...?

"Ah...!"

Luna made a face like she realized she’d made a slip-up.

It seems she accidentally let something slip.

『How much have you told him?』

In the meantime, Aira, still cool as ever, turned her gaze toward Luna.

『I haven't told him much…』

『That seems like it might be a problem…』

Aira tilted her head in response to Luna’s apologetic look.

The two of them began speaking in English again, leaving me out of the loop.

『Once everything has been explained, I think you should talk to him as well..』

『I see, so you intend to completely seal off any escape routes and corner him. Luna-sama must be quite fond of this gentleman』

『The way you phrased that rubs me the wrong way, but... I can’t deny it. He’s not only strong and courageous, but also very kind, considerate, and sincere…』

Luna blushed and, with heated eyes, glanced at me for a moment.

Could she be talking about me...?

『To think you’d evaluate him so highly... Understood, I will follow your judgment. But still... even with Luna-sama’s influence, I thought this was a bet with unfavorable odds, yet you’ve actually managed to achieve your goal.』

Aira spoke with a surprised tone and slowly approached me.

As she came closer, she peered into my face from up close, as if trying to stretch herself to get a better look.

『You have such clear, beautiful eyes... You have a kind face that Luna-sama would probably like, and you even have the strength to defeat my subordinates... Most importantly, if Luna-sama has chosen you, then... there shouldn't be any problems.』

She seemed to be muttering to herself while staring at my face, but this wasn’t... some kind of assessment, was it?

Not knowing whether I should look away, I could only stare back.

『Could you tell me his name, please?』

『It’s Seito-sama.』

When Aira spoke to Luna, Luna replied with a smile, saying my name. This caused Aira’s gaze to return to me.

"Seito-sama."

"Y-Yes?"

Suddenly being called by Aira, I answered in confusion.

"Is it true that you slept with Luna-sama?"

"Eh!?"

What in the world is this girl suddenly asking!?

And, wait... is that something like a gun pressed against my stomach...?

Why is she carrying something so dangerous in Japan...?

"Please answer honestly. What’s the truth?"

Should I really answer honestly?

If I do, it feels like she might pull the trigger...

I broke into a cold sweat and looked toward Luna.

Naturally, I made eye contact with Luna, who had been watching me, and she nodded while offering a gentle smile.

Could she not see what Aira was doing to me...?

No, that can’t be right.

She must know exactly what’s happening, and is calm because she trusts Aira.

Given that, the meaning behind that nod is...

"Y-Yes, it's true..."

"Did you two embrace?"

"Yes, that too, is true..."

Due to Luna’s request, we always slept while embracing each other.

I couldn’t deny it now, even if I wanted to.

"Thank you, confirmation has been received. Please forgive my rudeness."

After hearing my response, Aira holstered the gun and bowed deeply.

I felt like my lifespan had shortened by about ten years... but what was the real meaning of that question...?

『Luna-sama, it is true that your mother and father are angry. They’ve asked that you return to your country immediately.』

It seemed the conversation with me was over, as Aira turned back to Luna.

『I understand. I was prepared for this,"』

Luna said seriously, nodding at Aira before walking toward me.

Then, she...

"Thank you for these five days. I will return to you again."

—Suddenly, she kissed me on the cheek.

"L-Luna...!?"

"This will be a short farewell. Please don't forget about me."

With a somewhat lonely smile, Luna said that to me, and then she went back into the room.

"I will change, so please wait a moment."

It seemed that Luna really was leaving.

She was going to change into the clothes she had worn when she first arrived.

Since it was a girl changing clothes, I ended up half zoning out while waiting in the hallway.

Aira followed Luna into the room, so she might be helping her with the change.

"──Well then, farewell."

After changing, Luna put on her shoes and, with a farewell, tried to leave the room.

"You're really leaving...?"

Even though I knew there was nothing I could do about it, I couldn’t help but ask.

Though we had only spent a few days together, Luna had become such an important presence in my life.

"......I will definitely return."

Luna answered, not looking back, and left the room.

The farewell was far too abrupt.

"Seito-sama."

"Aira...?"

"I truly thank you for helping Luna-sama. She will definitely keep her promise, so please wait with that in mind."

Aira deeply bowed, then, still holding the unconscious woman, left the room.

She will definitely keep her promise, huh...

I still didn’t know her true identity, and now I was left to believe and wait...

However──even as the end of summer vacation drew near, she never returned.

It felt like a hole had opened in my heart.

How much time had passed since Luna left?

The sense of loss from her departure was greater than I had expected.

Luna had said she would return, but... when exactly would she come back...?

And more importantly, would she really come back...?

I had been thinking about nothing but this for a long time.

──Ding-dong.

"──!? "

The intercom suddenly rang.

I quickly shot up from my bed and rushed toward the door.

"Luna──!"

"Huh...?"

When I opened the door, I expected to see Luna's elegant, gentle smile, but instead, cold, contemptuous eyes greeted me.

"Ri...on...?"

Standing on the other side of the door was not Luna, but my cool, beautiful younger sister, Rion, with her sleek black hair hanging straight down.

She was usually a very cool person, but at her core, she was kind-hearted, caring, and thoughtful.

But now, she was looking at me as if I were nothing more than trash.

"Luna? Who’s that... What, are you trying to rub something in my face?"

In a tone much lower than usual, Rion asked me.

She tilted her head slightly, but instead of looking cute, there was an overwhelming sense of intimidation in her demeanor.

It seemed like she was really angry.

And it was entirely my fault for making her upset.

"N-No, I was just half-asleep... It’s an anime character...”

I had, of course, never told my family about Luna, and I wanted to keep it that way.

Especially Rion—I definitely didn’t want her to know.

If I told her I had brought someone home and let them stay, someone like her, who was a person of common sense, would be even angrier.

Even though she was kind-hearted, her cool air made her a little scary when she got mad.

"…………"

Rion's mood didn’t improve as she silently stared at me.

After knowing her for so long, I could tell.

This was the look she gave when she didn’t believe me.

"Um, what’s going on? Did you need something?"

The atmosphere had gotten uncomfortable, so I tried to change the subject by asking why she had come.

"Is it wrong to visit if I don’t have anything to do? It’s not that far, and I’m just checking in on family."

Rion, who seemed to have calmed down a bit, tilted her head again with a somewhat indifferent attitude.

She referred to us as family, not childhood friends—and that reminded me of how things had changed.

It had been about a year since then, so I knew I should get used to it, but...

"Thanks for coming all the way here. I'm fine, though."

"Yeah, but it doesn’t look like you’re living that well."

After saying that, Rion reached out and started running her hand through my hair.

She was probably trying to smooth it down, as I likely had bedhead.

Since I was still in my pajamas, it probably looked like I had been lounging around until the afternoon.

"It’s not exactly lazy..."

I tried to cover up, though it probably didn’t matter much.

"Just because you live alone doesn’t mean you’re allowed to do whatever you want."

With that, Rion started taking off her shoes, as if she was planning to come inside.

"Wait, what are you doing...!?"

"I’m checking your room. Making sure it hasn’t turned into a garbage dump. What, are you seriously telling your little sister she can’t come in and look around?"

Rion stared at me with a no-nonsense attitude, waiting for my response.

I thought it was strange that she showed up suddenly without any notice, but it seemed like she had come for a surprise check.

However... she had always been cool, but she wasn't the type to do something this forceful.

This—she must be really angry...

I had too many ideas as to why, so I couldn’t complain.

"I keep my room clean."

Unable to stop her, I sighed and answered as Rion stepped into the room.

"…It looks that way. If it had turned into a garbage dump, I was planning on dragging you back with me."

After glancing around the living room and bedroom, Rion seemed satisfied.

I was relieved; luckily, I had kept up with cleaning.

"If there’s no problem, then you can leave now—"

"Huh? I’m not leaving yet."

When I tried to suggest she leave, she tilted her head in confusion, her expression blank.

Seriously...?

"Is there something else you need?"

"Have you finished your homework?"

"Yeah, I finished that."

I had completed my summer homework a little before meeting Luna.

Since I’d often done homework with Rion when we were younger, I’d gotten into the habit of finishing early, and this time was no different.

"I see..."

But Rion turned her face away, clearly displeased.

Why was she upset even though I had finished it?

"Have you had lunch yet?"

"Well... not yet..."

I hadn’t eaten lunch, or even breakfast for that matter.

Since Luna had left, I had lost the motivation to do anything and had only been eating the bare minimum.

"Good thing, I haven’t eaten yet either. I’ll cook."

When Rion realized I hadn’t eaten, she smiled.

I was a little surprised by her rare expression, but it seemed she was going to make me a meal.

Since both of our parents were busy with work, Rion and I had cooked together since elementary school.

In fact, it was Rion who had taught me how to cook.

Naturally, she was much better at it than I was.

"There’s no food though…"

"Why is there none? Please don’t tell me you’ve been eating out or having convenience store meals all the time?"

When she saw the lack of food in the fridge, Rion narrowed her eyes and looked at me with a skeptical expression, which was a complete contrast to her previous smile.

I knew what she was thinking, and given the situation, it was only natural for her to ask that.

But honestly, there was nothing I could do about it.

I didn’t have the energy to cook.

"I just ran out of stuff, that’s all."

"Really? You do know that cooking for yourself was part of the deal for living on your own, right? If you’re not doing it, I’ll tell your parents."

Rion was clearly suspicious.

As she pointed out, cooking for myself had been one of the conditions for living alone.

It wasn’t about money, but about making sure I managed my nutrition properly.

If I couldn’t do that, they wouldn’t allow me to live alone—if she told my parents, they’d make me move back home.

To be honest, I hadn’t been cooking for myself since Luna left, so it was a delicate issue...

"I do cook for myself."

I had been cooking on my own until recently.

That wasn’t a lie.

"…Well, fine. I’m going to the supermarket, so change."

"I’m coming too…?"

When I asked, she gave me a look that clearly said I should just go along without questioning it.

It seemed obvious that I was supposed to go with her.

Even though I was still hung up on my confession, judging by the way Rion acted toward me, it seemed like she hadn’t given it a second thought.

I guess it was time for me to accept things and move on.

"──Thank you for the meal."

"It was no trouble."

After finishing lunch and putting my hands together in thanks, Rion replied with her usual indifferent attitude.

She was always like this, cool and composed.

"It was as delicious as always."

"Of course, I made it."

The fact that she could say that so confidently was impressive.

She was still the same self-assured person.

––However, she wasn’t the type to be overly confident.

She was the type to calmly evaluate herself, saying what she could do and what she couldn’t do with certainty.

That’s why she had the trust of those close to her.

Well, mostly the girls, though.

When it came to boys, Rion tended to keep them at a distance...

"––So, what should we do after the dishes are done?"

As we both washed the dishes, Rion glanced at me briefly.

It seemed she wasn’t planning to leave anytime soon.

"You have nothing to do, right?"

"Yeah... I’ll just relax."

Why isn’t she leaving...?

I didn’t ask because I knew she’d get annoyed, but still...

It’s awkward being with someone you’ve been turned down by, and I just wished she would read the room in that regard.

Though, with her, she might be purposely ignoring it.

After finishing with the dishes and putting them back on the shelves, Rion started rummaging through the bag she had brought with her.

"The sink’s that way, right?"

"Yeah, but... I don’t have a new toothbrush..."

I pointed to where the sink was, scratching my cheek as I replied.

I understood she wanted to brush her teeth after eating, but I didn’t have a toothbrush for her to use.

...A toothbrush...?

Crap...

I suddenly remembered something, and a cold sweat ran down my back.

I could only hope the reason Rion was rummaging through her bag was different from what I feared.

But––

"Of course, I brought a brand-new one from home, so there’s no problem. Since there will probably be times when we eat here or even stay over..."

Unfortunately, my bad feeling turned out to be right.

On top of that, I realized Rion was saying something outrageous.

"Stay over?!"

"I’ve already gotten permission from Dad and Mom."

With a composed expression, Rion calmly dropped this bombshell.

A man and a woman of our age living under the same roof was something that shouldn’t be allowed.

––No, I know it’s not something I can say, but still...!

"Why did Dad and Mom agree to this?!"

"What’s wrong with a sister staying in her brother’s room?"

"That’s a matter for siblings who are actually related by blood!"

At least, it’s something that applies to siblings who have grown up together since they were young.

This isn’t something siblings who’ve only been family for about a year should be doing.

"My parents think of us as siblings who grew up together since we were kids. And as for me, I’ve always thought of you as my troublesome little brother."

"There are so many things I want to say right now..."

I know that Dad and Aunt saw us that way, as siblings who grew up together.

In fact, when Dad remarried, he directly told me, "Since you two grew up like siblings, it shouldn’t be a problem for you to live together."

But that was just their assumption, and I never thought of us as growing up like siblings.

I thought Rion felt the same way, but...

"I know we were seen as siblings, but... I’m the older brother here, you know?"

I couldn’t believe Rion thought of me as a little brother, so I couldn’t help but get a little revenge with that remark.

"Why is it that my birthday is later than yours? I’m definitely the older sister."

It seemed that Rion wasn’t satisfied with her position as the younger sister.

She’s the more responsible one, much smarter than me.

Plus, in middle school, she was the student council president.

And even now in high school, there are rumors that she’ll run for student council president in the election that takes place in October, so she’s clearly noticed by the school’s students––it’s obvious to anyone that she’s ahead of me in many ways.

But since my birthday is earlier than hers, there’s nothing she can complain about.

"…But getting back to the topic, did Dad and Mom really say it was okay?"

I felt like I was about to end up venting my frustrations at Rion, so I quickly shifted the conversation.

Even though it’s Dad and Mom, I’m sure they wouldn’t let Rion stay in my room...

"Don’t you get it? Everyone thinks it’s strange that you’re living alone. If me staying over helps maintain our family connection, I’m sure Dad and Mom would prefer that."

She sighed, clearly exasperated.

From her words since she arrived, it was clear Rion wanted me to come back home. I knew Dad and Mom weren’t exactly thrilled about me living alone either, given the conditions they set. However, I never expected her to bring up the whole family connection thing.

"It’s not like living alone means I’m not family anymore…"

"From me and Mom’s perspective, it seems like you ran away from home because we became a family. In other words, we feel like we drove you out. At least that’s how Mom feels. I think Dad feels similarly."

I finally understood why Rion wanted me to come back.

She was right—given their position, that’s probably how it looked to them.

In reality, I didn’t want to be home because things with Rion were awkward, so I couldn’t say they were wrong.

I had been avoiding looking at Rion, not thinking about how she might feel.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for it to turn out this way..."

"Even if you didn’t mean it, that’s how it ended up."

Rion spoke flatly, with no expression on her face.

Watching her, it almost felt like she didn’t care about me at all—but I knew that wasn’t the case. She tended not to show her emotions unless she was angry.

But—

"If you understand, why don’t you come back home? Everyone wants that…"

Rion gently took my hand and gave me a pleading look.

It was a rare sight for her, someone who usually didn’t show weakness to others.

Perhaps she herself was feeling as cornered as I was.

Considering not just Rion but also Dad and Mom, it seemed like it would be better to return, just as she said. At the very least, I wanted to respect her feelings for reaching out to me.

Above all, I couldn’t help but feel that my decision to leave the house because I didn’t want to stay with someone I was rejected by was childish.

But... I couldn't return now.

If Luna comes back, I have to stay in this house and wait for her.

"I’m sorry, but I can’t go back yet."

"........"

When I turned her down, Rion’s expression clearly darkened.

I felt sorry for her, but this was something I couldn’t compromise on.

Instead, if Luna comes back, I’ll definitely visit home.

"Uh, you wanted to brush your teeth, right? I need to do that too, so could you wait for a bit?"

Feeling uncomfortable, I decided to avoid the topic of staying over and made my way to the washroom.

Then, after making sure Rion wasn’t following me, I quickly hid Luna’s toothbrush and cup in the shelf.

"Phew, that was close... If Rion had found this, she would’ve questioned me about it."

This was why I was sweating.

I lived alone, yet there were two toothbrushes and cups in the bathroom—one clearly meant for a woman. Anyone would have found that suspicious.

I didn’t want things to get any more awkward with Rion.

That said...

"If Luna really does come back... how am I going to explain this to Rion and the others?"

I couldn’t imagine being able to give an explanation that would satisfy them, and that only added to my growing worries.

By the way, Rion didn’t mean she was staying over today, she was just saying there was a possibility she might stay in the future.

So she left the toothbrush set behind but went home before it got dark.

After that, the days passed without incident, and in the end, I spent the summer break without being able to reunite with Luna.
