Prologue
Three years ago, a global war broke out.
It wasn’t confined to a single place; it began everywhere. The cause? An alien invasion.
It’s the kind of scenario you’d see in a B-grade movie, but when it happens in real life, it’s anything but funny.
The days that followed were unspeakably horrific. Ordinary life turned into a waking nightmare.
Why Earth was targeted, what the aliens’ objective was—I still don’t know.
Information never reached grunts like me, and to be honest, I didn’t bother asking.
Day after day, my comrades died, and all we did was kill, kill, and kill those aliens in return.
If that’s how it was going to be, I didn’t want to think too hard about it. Just fight and kill. That was the unspoken agreement among us soldiers, dumb as we were.
Well, after all that chaos, the military somehow managed to wipe out all the aliens, and as of today, I’m officially discharged.
It’s been three years since I was drafted, the moment I entered middle school. Looking back, it feels like it all passed in a flash.
I’m not sentimental about it, but still, something stirs in my chest.
When I return to Japan, I’d like to go back to school.
Fortunately, Japan wasn’t turned into a battlefield, so there’s no need for reconstruction. Life’s supposed to go back to normal.
But there’s one thing that worries me.
For these past three years, all I’ve done is fight a war.
My academic skills are probably in the gutter. Can I even transfer into high school without issues?
As I was lost in thought, sighing at my own worries, someone slapped me on the back.
“Heyyy, Takashi! What’re you gonna do now?”
A cheerful, bell-like voice rang out.
When I turned around, there stood Natalie, her long blonde hair tied into twin tails, her golden cat-like eyes sparkling with amusement.
Natalie, who smiled like a playful kitten, was one of my comrades in the military.
She was one of the few people my age, and since she could speak Japanese, the two of us would often fool around with Shelly during breaks.
Despite that innocent-looking smile, Natalie was a bit of a monster.
I’d seen her fight countless times, and the way she killed was so brutal it almost made me feel sorry for the aliens.
In the end, her reputation grew so fierce that aliens would start fleeing the moment they spotted her. Seriously, how terrifying can one person be?
“I’m planning to head back home. What about you, Natalie?”
“Ugh, don’t even ask. My hometown’s gone, wiped off the map. I’ve got nowhere to go. Isn’t that tragic? I’m so pitiful, don’t you think?”
She gave me a deliberately exaggerated pout, glancing at me slyly. Whenever she pulled that face, it usually meant she was up to no good.
“What are you trying to say?”
“Hehehe, so, I was thinking… why don’t you take me with you to Japan? Let’s live together!”
She looked up at me with puppy-dog eyes, flashing a sticky-sweet grin. Knowing her true nature, it didn’t come off as cute at all.
“Didn’t Portman just invite you to his place? Why not go with him? The guy’s loaded.”
“Aw, don’t be so cold! I’d rather be with a strong man like you, Takashi~.”
“Strong, huh…”
Honestly, I’m pretty sure I’m weaker than you. If you’re looking for strength, why not go for a gorilla? I could recommend a good zoo.
Swallowing those words, I let out a reluctant sigh.
“Can’t say no when you’re the one asking, can I? You’ve saved my life more times than I can count.”
“Right? Be nice to your savior, okay?”
“But I’m telling you now—expenses are split fifty-fifty. You better pay your share.”
“Of course, of course! Oh, this is gonna be so much fun~!”
She twirled around in a little victory dance, clearly ecstatic.
Even when the war ended, she wasn’t this happy.
Watching her out of the corner of my eye, I started planning my next steps.
“First, I need to head back to my hometown… check in with my family. I hope they don’t think I’m dead…”
